I understand that organic means grown without artificial pesticides, fertilizers or other chemicals. But you don't really "grow" milk, so I don't see what you would use pesticides or fertilizers for in the first place.
I am aware that organic also means without growth hormones, but you can buy milk labeled "no artificial growth hormones" that isn't organic.
Someone please clarify. Thanks.

For those of you who are saying that organic milk is unpasteurized, what country are you in? I know that in the US pasteurized milk can still be organic.

In the U S the label "organic" means that it meets the standards set up by the government for an organic label.
Basically it is that everything that goes into the cow is organic; hay, feed, grain, etc.
There are also rules about access to pasture and how the calves are raised.
All milk, organic or conventional, is not allowed to have ANY antibiotics or residue. All milk is tested and tested and tested again to ensure that there are never any antibiotics in any milk produced for humans in the U S

Re: "you don't really "grow" milk, so I don't see what you would use pesticides or fertilizers for in the first place."
What about what the cows eat? Is their feed & grass free of pesticides and fertilizers? We're always hearing how pesticides get into dams and waterways too.
New research from a 4 year study shows organic milk has up to 90% more “beneficial compounds” - such as vitamins and antioxidants believed to help to combat disease.
Other studies show milk having higher levels of omega3 fatty acids, thought to boost health.

At this ponit of my son's life (age 3) I have been trying any single milk that is in the market. If your children doesn't present any health issue, or allergy, constipation, etc. Give them regular milk. Organic milk (the comercial) tastes the same & come from cows that eat healthy food, not additional chemicals. Cost high... if you can affor it so do it. I particular use rice milk which is caseine & gluten-free. But my son has a lot of allergy problem. It costs me the same as the regular cow milk because I prepare it....

Organic dairy farming in the UK is an important part of the overall organic farming picture with milk being the largest single organic product in the UK. The impact of organic dairy farming reaches beyond the dairy farms themselves. 0rganic arable farming is important, producing winter feeds, and feed supplements, since cows are not just fed on grass, but on grain crops as well. In an organic system, this feed must also be produced to strict organic standards.
‘Organic’ is a legally defined quality mark, indicating that production meets the Advisory Committee on Organic Standards (ACOS) criteria. These standards emphasise animal welfare and, by avoiding artificial fertilisers, pesticides and other non-natural chemicals, and prohibiting the routine use of antibiotics and other conventional drugs, also ensure care for the environment, and promote the highest standards of food quality and safety.

or MOST of the time it means they let the cow roam around and have as much space as they need and are let in when it rains! Also when one cow gets sick they treat them with a homemade treatment but if that doesnt work they give them real medicine and they have to be sent away from the organic farm.

Organic milk is straight from the cows utters. It has not been processed with pasteurization or treatment. It may be passed through a filter to clean out any dirt or particles, but it is basically straight out of the utters.

usually cows are fed a growth hormone to make them grow faster and bigger, it's considered carcinogenic (can cause cancer) in humans (find milk labeled no bRST (something like that) -- our 'normal' milk is banned in Europe because of this!!

It comes from cows that have not been treated with bovine growth hormone.
The cows are not treated with antibiotics.
The cows’ feed is grown without pesticides.
The cows are supposed to have access to pasture. Which doesn't mean much.
