Please don't hide it. Deception is wrong. You're going to let your mom know you want to be vegan and why. And here's how: First, you have to do some research to show that veganism is perfectly healthy and you won't be sacrificing anything by giving up dairy and eggs.

Second, offer to go grocery shopping with your mom and show her products that might suit you. If she buys you veggie burgers, you can just make sure the brand she buys is vegan, right? If she buys analogues, you can make sure those are vegan. I know that Whole Foods brand soy milk is pretty cheap--less than $2 per half-gallon tetra pack--and most national brands are not much more. Try out various soy milks (or rice milks or nut milks) to find which works best for you. As soon as you're old enough to work, you can help pay for the vegan items.

Third, offer to help mom in the kitchen. If you can make some of the sides and your vegan entree, she can make the other sides (vegan) and the nonvegan dish for the rest of the family. Show your mom that vegan cooking is pretty easy. Heck, cook a tasty vegan meal for your family, even if it's a stew or a casserole.

Good luck!

I'm guessing that if you told her, she wouldn't allow you to be vegan because of the nutritional issues involved-if she's cooking your meals for you, you're probably still growing and need all the nutrients to help your body develop properly.

Being vegan limits your potential sources of protein and other essential nutrients, but doing some research will make all the difference to your mom.

Find out other foods which can supplement an animal-by-product-free diet, and find out nutritional risks involved in not eating a proper vegan diet, full of all the nutrients your body needs. Present all the info to your mom, in a calm, thoughtful manner and let this know this is important to you. If you present it like a kid-whining and moaning, she'll treat you like one. Ask that she hear you out and consider what you say. This should help convince your mom that you are willing to commit to being a vegan, the health way.

I think this approach will help her accept that you will be eating vegan outside of the house, but you may need to do a little more convincing to get her to cook vegan. You could always look up some vegan recipes, which would appeal to your mom. Tell her that this kind of diet can also benefit her!

Hope this helps!!

How about wait a few more years, till you're on your own. I guess vegetarian is already bad enough, but vegan... ummm... I don't think she'll be thrilled about that. I mean, this would mean really conflict.

You don't hide it. If you're old enough to make this kind of decision, you're old enough to make your own food.
