This is really a good question. Gelatin can come from bones or hide. In the US it is almost always (I don't know of any that is not) made from either beef or hog. I know at least that the gelatin used in jello comes from hog hide. They do make a special beef gelatin for Arab countries. Your mom is wrong. I worked on these products off and on for 25 years.

Q. What is gelatin?

A. Gelatin is defined as a "product obtained from partial hydrolysis of collagen derived from natural sources such as skin, connective tissue, and bones of animals." It is an easily digestible protein that contains all the essential amino acids except tryptophan. Gelatin is NOT a chemical or chemically modified substance.

Q. Where does gelatin come from?

A. The raw materials used in the production of gelatin are from healthy animals and include cattle bone, cattle hides and fresh, frozen pigskins. In the North American market, these raw materials are basically sourced from government-inspected meat processing facilities.

I don't think out of horse, but other animals which we eat anyway to nourish our bodies (obviously we don't eat horse!)
A good example of the gel we use is from the pig, the gelatin we eat is used from the pork. Your mom needs to do a little more research. Don't worry buddy, You won this one!

Hi there,

This definition is from dictionary.com. It doesn't say what animal.

A colorless or slightly yellow, transparent, brittle protein formed by boiling the specially prepared skin, bones, and connective tissue of animals and used in foods, drugs, and photographic film.
