No im not living there permanantly, just going over for a year. Just wanting to know if i can drive in NSW (for the 3months) under a nz restricted license.

A NZ restricted licence held for less than 12 months is equivalent to a NSW provisional P1 licence; if held for 12 months or more, but less than 3 years, it is equivalent to a NSW provisional P2 licence.

You are correct in stating that your NZ licence is good for only three months. After that you must apply for the appropriate P1 or P2 licence.

Are you living their permanently now?
You have to go into http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/licensing/newtonsw/international_drivers.html to transfer your license over to a NSW one. They will fax NZ off for proof of your NZ license (showing it is never enough for them) That will take a couple days, Ask them to ring you once the fax has arrived, go back in and transfer your license over, and of course pay some fees.

Note - you do not loose your NZ license at all. You are just gaining another one
