It would have different effects depending on the type of Religion. Banishing the fear of Death would utterly destroy most of the sects who operate like the Protection Racket, "Do as we say or suffer eternal torture."
But, the need for comfort, the need ro understand and embrace the Unknown, the need to mark one's own piece of turf in the Megaverse and the need for Fellowship would always be there.
Religions not based on fear would thirve.

Well my dear sister, i think that we both know that all fear based religions would either tragically fade away, or go underground....
To think that we could become a more spiritual based tolerant world would be ideal, as long as all of the other immediate needs of the world were addressed in a very prompt fashion....feeding the hungry, overpopulation, taking care of the planet ....
But at the same time, i must agree with Raji, lol, this body is beginning to weaken and age....I am looking forward to the new one and the next time around perhaps I will have enough sense to take a little better care of this shell of a body!
Bright Blessings My Friend!

Many of them would disappear but some would still be alive since many people would feel lost after living so long since they might not be ready for it and start or keep looking for guidance there. I would surely take advantage of it to learn and grow, for example but some may keep no leading the same lives they use to live, which in my opinion are meaningless and empty existences. They are born they grow they have a family with all that's implied in it and then they die or well keep eating and arguing with their wives and husbands respectively, till they dropdead or forever as you fancy.

I think it depends on the religion in question. Some of the religions that teach a lot of fear would probably evaporate pretty quickly; if they're only based on saving their backsides after death, then I don't know that most people would stick with them. I think other religions would continue pretty much as they've been going; two that I can think of right offhand are Buddhism and Judaism, both of which teach that our job is to make THIS world a better place (among other things, of course). I think they'd certainly continue onward; the world would still need to improve, I suspect, and that's at least part of what those belief systems are all about.

I am forever saying that religions are just tools to help us be better people.
My religion, Religious Science, does believe in immortality - but I'm not sure if I do or not. And unlike other religions - just because I don't accept everything about the religion - they don't kick me out.
Anyway - as for me - if I was going to live forever - I don't think my religion would change at all.
But - I do believe that many of the religions that are somewhat fear based (hell) - would just wither away.
Namaste!

I believe religion was made for a number of reasons. To explain that which could not be explained from empirical observations, to define morality...what is right vs what is wrong, to provide people with hope of eternal life, to provide people with a sense of community, to name a few. If people became immortal then they would not need hope of eternal life, but these other factors which religion fulfills would still be there, So I think, religion in the present forms would go on without major modifications.

Depends on what the change was.
If it was agelessness, but no change in human nature, not much would change.
If it was complete immortality, I don't know.
Even though this answer is off topic,
I don't really think about this as much as what would happen if everyone suddenly knew everything.

I don't think much would change. There would still be fundamentalists in each religion. Only thing is now, they are still alive influencing people forever. It would get to be kinda scary after awhile.
