I am having a BBQ on the weekend, I have about 10 people, give or take a few, to cater for. I don't want it to cost too much due to having bought new tyres and vet bills for my dog (bad planning lol) so what should I serve? I am not used to having people over at our house so all I can think of is sausages, buns, burger patties and salad, what else could I do? I don't want too many leftovers either because we dont eat them.

Ribs are probably too pricey then, & a lot of trouble.
If it's not too late in the season, corn on the cob is great.
You can soak them in water & place on the grill whole.
Peel the husks back afterwards, to use as a handle.
Wrap pounds of butter in cheesecloth for coating the cobs.
Another tasty treat is vegetables on a kabob skewer.
If skewers are wooden, soak them overnight first.
Use several alternating colourful veggies:
Peppers, onions, mushrooms, small tomatoes, zucchini, etc.
Brush them with olive oil or salad dressing

It doesn't have to cost you a lot of money to make your barbecue memorable. Remember -- most people expect burgers and potato salad. So any different food is good. And if you follow our cheap barbecue party ideas you can impress your guests for not a lot of money.

First off I must state that there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with burgers and potato salad. I love them both and all weekend griller's BBQ parties should have a good selection of these and other basics. But just a few other cheap barbecue party food ideas during planning can save your food -- and your parties -- from boring repetition.

Here are five cheap and easy food ideas you can try immediately to make you next BBQ party memorable and fun:

1) One word -- Condiments! Everyone has mustard and ketchup. Occasionally you see a lonely bottle of Frank's. But for very little money or effort you can add a rainbow of taste to your table and impress your guests. Visit a specialty store or good supermarket and pick up some bottles of unusual BBQ sauces or hot sauces for the table. Do not just paint the meat on the grill -- give your guests a choice on the table. Today's BBQ and hot sauces come in a wide variety of flavors and heat levels and there is something for (almost) everyone. Consider the food you are serving and other sauces that may complement it. If you are serving chicken consider a white BBQ sauce or horseradish sauce. If you are serving fish consider a sweet Barbeque sauce or a Vietnamese or Japanese fish sauce.

2) Salsa -- Not just for corn chips anymore! Several years ago salsa took over the number-one-selling condiment spot in the US from ketchup but most people still think of it as just a dip for chips or a covering for Mexican foods. Salsa is -- and can be -- so much more. Consider visiting a Farmers' Market or specialty food store the morning of the barbecue and picking up a fresh salsa. Or better still, yet spend a little time the night before the party and make a batch of homemade salsa. It's really very easy. And don't just stick to the basic tomato/pepper salsa -- be brave and try a fruit or a veggie based salsa. Choose your salsa based on the meat and vegetables you will be serving and invite your guests to cover these foods for a new taste experience.

3) It's almost embarrassing how much good will and praise can be produced by a simple salad. As cheap BBQ party ideas go, this is one of the best. Everyone does potato and macaroni salad. Ask your friends to bring a dish and you'll probably get 3 of each. You can impress everyone to no end by making up a colorful and easy pasta or fruit salad that not only looks great but tastes great, too. Add some items off the grill into it at the last moment for an unforgettable touch.

4) Sides -- Go beyond the salad! So you've brought your impressive (though cheap) salad. But now think beyond to other side dishes. What springs to mind? If you are like most people - corn on the cob comes to mind. There is nothing wrong this. But to really impress your guests think of adding one or two other unusual sides that will complement the main course. And remember that sides don't have to be just veggies. Think of the possibilities of fruits, shellfish and even meats.

5) Desserts - Why not use the fire? Okay, you gotta have a dessert. You'll probably want something cold (homemade ice cream, maybe?) and some sweets for the kids. But since the fire is still warm why not consider really impressing your friends by making an additional dessert or two on the grill. Make homemade ice cream (always a reasonably cheap choice) AND grilled dessert to go with it and you will be considered a party god for many years.

Since most BBQ parties feature the same basic foods, these cheap party food ideas will help any weekend griller to impress their guests. Do it well and your friends will invite you to every party and beg for an invitation to yours.

enjoy yr bbq party.

that sounds like so much fun. where i live we aren't allowed to have fires on the beach. i have bbq's all the time. here are some of the things that i do that i think are pretty inexpensive. chicken thighs you can marinate them over night before the bbq or put sauce on them when they near the end of the cook time. hamburgers they are cheap and everyone loves them just make sure that you have all the fixins like lettuce tomato pickles relish and cheese. whole chicken you can give it a spice rub and then stick a beer can in the hole at the bottom and cook it standing up on the grill it will keep the chicken moist and give it great flavor grilled veggies try eggplants squash green yellow red peppers mushrooms marinate them over night in italian dressing and use a pizza pan, the kind with holes on the bottom and just put the pan right on the grill rack. grilled potatoes i got this idea from a show on tv and when i tried it everyone loved it. cut the potatoes into slices that are about 1/3 of an inch thick and season them with whatever you want. i like salt and pepper, olive oil, a little bit of chopped rosemary and just a tiny bit of crushed red pepper. only keep them on the heat for about one to one and a half minutes per side. Pasta Salad boil some pasta and coat it in italian dressing and cut some pepperoni, green peppers, cherry tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and put that in there. this is sooooo cheap and everyone loves it Potato Salad peel potatoes chop into uniform bite sized peices and boil. while they are boiling mix mayo mustard relish ( drain as much of the fluid as you can first) and just a little bit of vinegar when the potatoes are done let them cool and then put the mayo mixture on the cool potatoes. Baked Beans I like bushs baked beans. put them in a glass casserole and bake them in the oven but you could use metal pan and put it on the grill if you want it warm but make it at home first because it will be better that way. put the beans in the casserole and mix in chopped green peppers, chopped onions, bbq sauce, vinegar and a little bit of mustard. cover the top with bacon and bake it until the bacon on top is crispy. i also cook the rest of the pound of bacon in a frying pan until it is really crispy and then i crumble it and put it into the beans. also you can ask everyone that is coming to bring a dish. desserts and sides work best and you provide the main course hope this helps.

Burgers and dogs don't cost much. But that's more for the kids. If you want to stay within your budget, try chicken leg quarters. Its much cheaper than beef. Just make sure you cook it all the way. Season it the night before, and don't add the BBQ sauce until its cooked. The sugars in the sauce will burn so add it at the end, glaze it up and pull it off. I like to put it in a pan cover it up and stick it in the oven for about 30 min, just to make sure its cooked and keep it warm. Good Luck!!!

Um, like skewers maybe? those kind of leftovers are more bearable in my opinion.. buy like 5lbs of marinated chicken or pork, buy a bunch of those long sticks, and reduce the number of hamburgers or hotdogs... and on the side maybe a fruit salad? not too expensive, if you're only planning on serving 10 or so people.

It will depend on the fruit or plant involved with a comparison. In the event that you compare a n to a carrot, the carrot is the better of the two nutritional. But once you compare an avocado to the carrot, then this avocado is better. Equally the apple and avocado, are fruits.
