I am too much of a sushi snob--- meaning that I am a purist when it comes to sushi. I prefer nigiris and traditonal rolls (none of that shrimp tempura/mango/avecodo overkill stuff). But I am seeing someone who does not eat sushi. How do I break him in? What are some delicious items that will mask all fishy tastes? I'd imagine recommending uni would be way too much for him. :)

If he's afraid of trying raw fish, let him know he can try the ones that are all vegetarian or cooked ones. Shrimp, crab, lobster and eel are always cooked, for example.

By the way, Tadow is incorrect. California rolls are not vegetarian as they contain crab.

My 2 cents:
cent 1: Gently break him into sushi with the cooked stuff or those with just veggies inside, like California, cucumber, cooked eel, egg or smoked salmon rolls.
cent 2: Don't tell him that the stuff inside is raw and see what happens. Of course this would help if the raw fish's appearance is obviously raw,or hidden ;-) so steer clear from nigiri.
Ok, apparently I have a third cent: Dare him to show off his manly courage and eat nigiri!!!!

Next time you want to go out to a meal try taking him to a Japanese restaurant. There you can experience a varied menu of sushi such as raw or cooked fish and introduce to your partner vegetable or egg sushi. And while you are experiencing the taste of the sushi let him know how sexual you are feeling when the flavours begin to explode in your mouth. Trust me unless he has an allergy to fish he will try some. Or order a take-a-way next time.

I agree with having him try California rolls first. Then maybe have him try a spicy tuna or salmon roll, the sauce covers up any fishy taste that may (and shouldn't) be present. Then work him up to a nice piece of fresh tuna dipped in some soy sauce with a hint of wasabi. Good luck!

My husband...who claimed to "hate" sushi now drags me out to our fav place because of Unagi...just a hint, though, do NOT tell your date it's eel. My hubbie ate 2 pieces of it and was in love...then he asked what it was. I told him, and he figured if he could eat eel, what is a little raw tuna? Try the milder fishes, like halibut or scallop...and get him started by trying a less "scary" appetizer like some soft shell crabs...they are fun...they taste amazing, and he will really feel manly after he eats one. Good luck!

I'm not sure how to convince your date about sushi..... but never eat sushi from a restaurant on a monday. that's when they mark down the price of it because they are trying to get rid of spoiling sushi from friday and the weekend.

Easy you dont. Have him order some other Japanese dish while you eat and enjoy your sushi. Terijaki, Udon, Negamaki,.... Maybe after several outting he might be receptive to trying something off your plate.

Have him eat California Rolls first. The idea of eating raw fish really is disgusting to people who haven't had it before. Explain to him what is in a California Roll (all veggies). That's how I started.

if he enjoys smoked salmon then start off with salmon, because the taste, flavor and texture between the two are very similar. then slowly transition him to other sushi fish one at a time. mmmmm.... i love pumpkin pie

I am sure, he is a big boy---leave him alone. I do not like sushi. If someone knew----- I did not like sushi and continue ask me to eat--if not being fair to me.
