speaking from a marshal arts point of view a metal staff is not much good for combat the vibration and shock of an impact would cause you to drop said staff the best material for a staff is white oak if you wanted a lot of weight then you could use a very heavy dense wood such as lignum vitae which is extremely expensive

I would try to use carbon fibre (What Formula 1 cars are made of) 1 fith the weight of steel but 5 times stronger. Or aluminium.

If you must have metal you can buy ready made aluminium telescopic ones,try Feltons Yard on the net.
Composites (carbon fibre or glass fibre) with thermosetting resin in tubular form are also good.

the best material i would say is aluminium as it is light weight and durable, it wont rust. most staffs are made of this material anyway

Depends on how strong it needs to be.
Titanium would be best, but expensive.
Aluminium is relatively cheap and easy to come by, but not as strong.

Duralumin. It's a lightweight alloy and you can buy rods of it at a non-ferrous metal stockholders.

I would think aluminum would work well. Its the not *most* durable but if you construct it well it should be fine. Aluminum is used in things like tent poles and they generally hold up quite well with normal use.
