I have a studio I work in that is lighted with fluorescent light and I'm in and out of that area several times each day. Should I be turning that light on and off as I enter and leave the room or leave it on for the 12 hours or so that the room might be used each day?

If you are leaving a room for more than 5 minutes at a time you should turn your lights off.

You should just buy a light switch that is motion activated, and set it for like 5 minutes delay, so you won't have to worry about turning it on or off and you'll save money in the long run. Also, it can adjust to your behavior as well, sometimes an hour a day, or sometimes just 5 minutes a day.

It saves power to turn it off, even for 10 seconds. But it causes wear and tear on the light so that the bulb or tube will need to be replaced sooner if you turn it on and off a lot.

I would say you should turn it off if you are going to be out of the room for more than 5 minutes. If you find your self not turning it off just think to yourself $.

constant switching off and on will wear or burn out the bulbs, so compare the costs of electricity of letting it on for xxhr long, vs reduce life of the $xx value of bulb......

on/off < 10 times per day is consider normal...
