As a Vietnam vet.... I must ask you...what do you mean by a raw deal? We received all the benefits they told us we would rate when we joined.
If you are talking about the treatment we received when we returned.... OK.... we were treated pretty crappy... but that is part of the game. We were in a very unpopular war (conflict). We didn't have the backing of the VERBAL American people nor many of the officials in the government. We were not permitted to fight the war under traditional rules....we had the politicians telling us how to fight, who to fight.....and then telling their constituents that we were just drug crazed killers. We were insulted and disliked by the most verbal of our countrymen and women.
But we have our pride...and we know we did a good job. We hold our heads high and do so without the accolades given to the military of WWI, WW2, or the Wars we are currently fighting.
Semper Fi,
Z

It was the wave of the youth movement that sparked this, Most of those who wined the Vietnam vet wrongfully back then have since grown and realized their mistakes, These are the so called Yuppies of today. The quitter I call them. They couldn't handle being a hippie only liked the lifestyle while their mom and pops payed for it. Who would you support a yuppie quitter who is a fake, or a vet who put his life on the line daily? Yes we mistreated our Vietnam vets we should be slamming yuppies now.

Absolutely. The anti-war crowd of that day made sure that their return was as unpleasant as it could possibly be.
Even those of us who did not go to Vietnam, but served in the military in subsequent years, got harassed and screwed over on this. Things didn't start to get better for us until after Operations DESERT SHIELD/DESERT STORM.
And the way the radicals and left wing are acting now, I don't think it will be too long before it starts happening to our Soldiers returning from the Middle East, too.

Yeah, so we got a raw deal. No parades, no universal applause, no crowds at the airport. That was more than 30 years ago. Most of us moved on. It's history, no sense in picking at old wounds.

My dad came back on crutches and a teenager spit in his face at the DC aiport and called him a baby killer.
He is in a constant fight to keep his disability benefits.
I'd say it was a raw deal. I saw a show on the History Channel on the Gulf War and they interviewed a man who served in Viet Nam and in the Gulf. Anyways, when his unit got a hero's welcome he said he was shocked and amazed and never in a million years thought he would see US military receive such a warm welcome after coming home from war.

Yes, my dad was 18 when he went to Vietnam. He was cussed out and spit on as soon as he boarded a plane in California to come home.
