I think you should know heart failure to distinguish it from CCF, this definition will help you out:
Heart Failure
Heart failure is a clinical syndrome resulting from a cardiac disease which compromises ventricular systolic or diastolic function or both. Heart failure results when the heart is unable to generate a cardiac output sufficient to meet the demands of the body without unduly increasing diastolic pressure. Heart failure may be manifested by symptoms of poor tissue perfusion alone (e.g., fatigue, poor exercise tolerance, confusion) or by both symptoms of poor tissue perfusion and congestion of vascular beds (e.g., dyspnea, chest rales, pleural effusion, pulmonary edema, distended neck veins, congested liver, peripheral edema).
Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a clinical syndrome caused by heart disease, characterized by breathlessness and abnormal sodium and water retention, and resulting in edema. This term is used when there is congestion of pulmonary or systemic vascular beds.

CHF is simple. Congestive Heart Failure is when the heart fails to work properly as a pump. Caused my many things too numerous to list. When the heart cant pump well fluid backs up into the peripheral circulatory system causing edema or swelling and can eventually lead to left heart failure which then will fill your lungs with fluid making it difficult to breathe and function. Medicines are used to slow and strenghthen the force of contractions as welll as diuretics to help pull the fluid off. Most often affecting the elderly but it is becoming more prominent in younger groups.

Congestive heart failure means the heart muscle has gotten large and floppy and does not contract effectively. It's called Starling Law, if you stretch a rubber band out and hold it for a while, it loses elasticity, this is what happens to heart muscle from obesity, high blood pressure and disease.

Inablity of the heart to cope wth its workload of pumping blood to the rest of the body. Can be either right or left side of the heart. Commonly affects both side. Heart failurt can be acute or chronic (congestive).
Left side failurt may be due to :
1. Hypertension (high blood pressure)
2. Anaemia
3. Hyperthyroidism (over activity of the thyroid gland)
4. Heart valve defect (Aortic stenosis, aortic incompetence or mitral incompetence)
5. In all of these conditions, the left side must work harder than normal to pump the same amount of blood.
6. Can be coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction (heart attack), cardiac arrthythmias or cardiomyopathy.
Right side caused by :
1. Pulmonary hypertension (blood pressure raised)
2. Obstructive pulmonary diseases
3. tricuspic incompetence.

CHF-
a lot of things cause CHF....In my line of work as a Respiratory Therapist, I see it where the heart looses it's ability to pump blood thru the lungs [there's an increase resistance because of poor lungs]...The result is where fluids back up in the lungs, liver and ankles....
I see the ankles are swollen, and usually the legs are purple/blue in color and are sensitive to the touch...they can cause pitting [ slightly squeese the ankle with your hand, and your fingers leave pits on the skin]...
What to do for that condition? Well, it's beyond my scope of practice, so I send them to the doctor to get evaluated and get some heart medications....
