that are made from the leftover parts? The animal is already dead and wasn't killed for those products directly.

Against my better judgement I'll use the rendered animal fertilizer as an example. This question has nothing to do with the double-standard I believe today's vegans has.

The animals that are used to make products such as fertilizer, those pesky enzymes on the Doritos, soap or any secondary product, are already dead regardless.

So why would it be wrong to use those products when it would have no impact on the amount of animals killed?

Hi allie---thought I'd let you cool off a little...LOL

But, the fact is those animals would be killed for their meat anyways. No animals lives would be spared by not using those other products. That's why I am trying to understand why it's still taboo.

albert----I know you "albert's" are big on theories, and that's all your post will ever be is a theory because meat will always be on the menu for at least some of the population.

I do find it hard to believe they'd kill horses to make Jello from their hooves though.

ryan---"What is wrong is getting down on other people for thier life choices. "----spare me the defensive posture because I'm just looking for an understanding and you don't provide it. You make a good point about the meat producers making $$$ off selling the remainders of the animals they butcher, but even if they don't sell those parts the animals will still be slaughtered.

Why are leather shoes non-vegan because they use the skins of meat animals but vegetables that are fertilized with the rest of the animal is ok? Why is one ok but not the other?? Please give an answer that isn't "convenience" related.

allie----you saying I'm wrong doesn't make me wrong. I'm waiting for your reply to the "vegan society is the source of the honey site's veganism definition" discussion. You need to address the misinformation of your's i've pointed out.

In this case, it doesn't make much of a difference. It is just a choice that I make.

The point regarding extra profits made by the industry is valid but that has no effect on the amount of suffering involved.

Michael H is right.

actually saying that animal products like leather, geltain ect. are just by products that if not used wouldnt put a dent in the cattle industry is laughable. its completely false. there is big bucks in whats left over after meat is taken...just using an obvious example. a pair of leather shoes or a purse ( not even designer) put together in china paying workers pretty much nothing can go for $100 or more. a steak...about 8 bucks. the meat is not where the main money is, its everything aferward that is where a lot of profit is made. your thoughts dont even really make sense...they dont just give away the other products for gods sake. the cow wasnt killed just for meat directly and then somebody thought heyyyy...maybe someone might wanna buy this. they kill for a variety of reasons.

There is no such thing as a by-product - every single thing that is sold is adding to the profit, and so helps to make animal exploitation a lucrative business.

And often they are not so-called by-products at all. Take leather as an example
Much leather is not in fact made from the skin of meat cows, but from animals reared solely for leather production (they actually often have better welfare conditions to produce better leather),.

The documentary 'Earthlings' (apparently it's free to watch on Google Video) discusses how most of the leather made for the US comes from cows in India which are slaughtered mostly for their leather, not their meat.

All animal by-products contribute to the cost model of the animal.

Leather accounts for about 20% of the profit of a cow.

Use leather, and you are responsible for the slaughter of that cow. Why ? Because if leather wasn't used the cost of meat would go up and less people would eat it - then less animals woudl be reared and killed.

No by-product is guilt or crulty free, it all carries the same blood.

Why do you use rendered animal fertilizer if its against your better judgement. Do you have no self-control or ability to make your own decisions ? No one id forcing you to do it so "in your judgement" it must be best to use it , surely ?

I often agree with Krister but in this case i disagree. Using by-products DOES contribute to the suffering. It encourages the meat industry and helps promote further use of animal products thus sustaining the industry for the future. The less by-prodcuts we use, the smaller the meat industry gets. I see no difference to using a by-product "because the animal is already dead" to eating meat because the animal is already dead - it all supports the industry.

If we didn't use by-products, the price of meat would sky-rocket, consumption would go down, less animals would be killed.

Aww you're back, we've missed you!!

The reason I'd say is because if you buy something that was made using dead animals, you are indirectly supporting the killing of those animals.

Of course eating vegetables fertilized with animal junk is unavoidable. But choosing to turn down a dorito is something that is very much within our power.

Edit: LOL yes, mr. meat is very annoying...
If there is less demand there will be less of a supply.
So choosing not to use animal products means that you are causing less of a demand for them -- no matter how small.

Another thing that I forgot to mention is that we are refusing to eat the animal, why should we eat something that comes from the animal?

Edit: wow you really can't accept that you are wrong.

it says in the bible to love thy beasts, and that we are no better then they are (might doesn't make right). i personally belive that the bible can be interpreted different ways, that is why there is so much conflict amongst religious people. and i think if you interpret the bible the way a vegan/vegetarian does it says in the bible that we need to respect animals. it also talks about in the bible that if you see an evil you should do everything you can to stop it, and if you don't then you are no better then the person committing the evil deed. i personally believe the way that animals that are slaughtered is plain evil, hence why I do not eat meat. i hope that answers your question.

Its not a matter of it being right or wrong.

Its simply a matter of personal opinion.

If you dont think its wrong then whatever, go ahead and use them.

If someone believes its wrong and they dont want to use them then its entirely fair for them to do so.

Also, if the people who actually kill the animals cant sell the non meat by products, it will hurt thier bottom line, which is still making a difference.

What is wrong is getting down on other people for thier life choices.

the ability choose what they want for thier life is the same freedom to choose that you have.

What about the animals that are killed as a by-product of harvesting grain? I agree, vegans are living by a double standard.

I want to minimize the amount of profit that businesses make off using animal products. I want them to find alternatives. I want businesses who use animal by-products to STOP supporting the killing of animals and the unhealthy practice of consuming animal products. Don't think that the fact that a slaughterhouse can sell off bits and pieces of the leftovers isn't a factor for them. If the market for their leftovers goes away maybe they'll decide it's not worth it to just sell meat since people are finally starting to wise up and listen to the science that says animal products are awfully unhealthy. Maybe they'll all go out of business and start farms instead!

some people simply live by different standards than you choose to live by.

It's not a question of right and wrong. Some people simply love animals and do not want to think of them being harmed or killed, in the name of human use or consumption.
