The idea is to get a bit of a shoveling motion going. If you watch the japanese they make a very fast shoveling motion. If you do it slow you can forget about it. it's also easier if you have a bowl and you hold it closer to your mouth.

Some Asians say that using chopsticks is "a martial art that lets you use the energy of the food itself to project it into your mouth". Huh? Never heard that before! ROFL. Anywho, I don't really get the point of this question. You're frustrated that you can't use chopsticks and you're putting out your frustration by ranting...on Yahoo! Answers. Which is against the guideliines, if you must know. Most Asian rice tend to be sticky, and if you grab it with your chopsticks, it'll stick on pretty well. It'll still fall off if you wave it around in the air, but you would be able to eat rice with it. "Even if I did know how to use them, I'd still have trouble actually picking up the food." You only say that BECAUSE you can't use them. Stop whining, jeez. You can't use chopsticks! OKAY. I've been using chopsticks since I was seven, and it's pretty easy. But isn't it harder to learn something when you're older, than it is when you're younger? Anywho, if it's so impratical, just go on and use a fork. No one's making you use chopsticks. Edit: Why did the answer above me get a thumbs down? -__- It's the best answer here!

It's easy. Hold the bowl of rice with 1 hand. Hold the rice not 2 tight or loose. You can place the rice on top or in the middle of the chopsticks.

Sticky rice is very easy to eat with chopsticks, as it sticks together. I never had any problem with that or noodles at all.

I've been eating with chopsticks since I was 6 years old (not Asian, rather Cherokee, but we ate out pretty often.)

Well..I'm as american as apple pie, but I love eating ethnic food, especially asian

Since I figured out how to use chopsticks, for some reason I can't enjoy chineese food with a fork and spoon.. If someone serves me Lo Mein noodles.. I actually don't know how to eat them without chopsticks LOL....

AS for rice, it can be slightly tricky, but if you are used to using chopsticks, you can eat anything with them..

THat said, I prefer Korean Sticky rice (or any sticky rice) for this very reason: It is easier to eat with chopsticks

AHHHH For a nice bowl of sticky rice topped with sweet and sour tofu, and squares of toasted seaweed to lay over it... with my chopsticks, I just use the seaweed to grab a hunk of the stuff and shovel it in... mmmmmmm

I had the same problem - my boyfriend is VN and he told me that I should hold the bowl close and kind of scoop up the rice/noodles with the sticks....I still have a problem with them criss crossing on me, but holding the bowl with one hand helps...

Maybe some images will help. I was taught by an old man. He took my hairband and wraped it around the chopsticks to make it easier to hold onto both of them.
