People ASK, doesn't mean its right or they need them.

The people who ask are normally new to vegetarinism and asking an open question. unfortunately they are led to believe beng veggie is unhealthy because there is so much mis-information available.

You may notice there are now a few people in this forum that diliberatly spread misinformation about vegetarianism, one of them is even called "Captain Misinformation". They pose as Veggies or vegans just to create confusion. If you are looking at them to prove being veggie is unhealthy then you are on a sticky wicket.

No person who has been veggie for a long time will say supplements are needed.

Are we all now being judged because a few people are trying to learn or delibrerately making stuff up ? It seems that way.

If you are prompted to ask this becasue of the recent B12 question...Firstly, the perosn didn't say they needed more or they needed a supplement, they asked what is a good source. YOU were the one that said take a supplement and then prompted to tell the questioner "you are screwed"

I wonder if i should now have answered your question about food types afecting ones abiltiy to be polite. I wonder if "you are screwed" is a direct result of all that red meat intake ?

Well David V., I always like your question (1) because the are quite poignant, and (2) because they always bring out the most fantastic replys by the fanatics . . .including the perennial the Free Range In Abstentia Cattle Killer, who is an absolute HOOT. What a sodding flogger!!

And you are correct. If you have a healthy diet, why all these supplements? I think that many long range health problems in veggie heads are as a result of nutrient deficiency, but the etiology is difficult to trace to that. A balanced, moderate diet is the only way to not only avoid supplements but to avoid "missing" a nutrient you need and sustaining a health problem down in the future.

As our Celtic friend pointed out, because of excess use of chemical fertilizers, the earth has been robbed of her nutrients. We have to wash vegetables before we eat them, and some beneficial microbes are washed off with the harmful ones. We're able to get more types of food from all over the world, and the travel time diminishes nutrient content.

Besides, what nutrients does meat have besides protein, fat, cholesterol and maybe some B vitamins? It has no fiber. It has no folic acid. It has no vitamin C. Omnivores also take vitamin supplements because so much nutrition has been stripped from our food.

And there are vegan supplements available.

David,
There are plenty of Vegan Sups on the market.

On why peeps need sups; 1) The earth is not as fertile or full of nutrients it once was. Mostly because of poor farming practices.
2) Some peeps have health issues that need extra help. Some are genetic some or poor eating habits in the past or even as they eat now.

I do think if you are eating well you don't need sups. But there are so many factors involved everyone needs to listen to their own bodies. This is not an ideal world, we are not ideal humans. Ya' got to work with what you have.

Michael H has it right. Almost always, when people are asking about whether or not they should take supplements and which ones, they are either brand new vegetarians or soon-to-be's who have heard that we take supplements from some uninformed omnivore. I can't think of a single person who has been a vegetarian for any significant amount of time who takes supplements. It just isn't necessary.

Well, i don't ask questions about "artificially sourced supplements" so what are you talking about?
I take B-12 whose source is NATURAL bacteria and kelp which is a sea vegetable. No animals harmed there.

because some are misinformed about the vitamins in their veggies.
you don't really need artificially sourced supplements if you have a well-rounded diet, be it veggie only or meat only or both. an example is for the nutrient Protein. protein is in beans and nuts and natural veggie oils and seeds, and if some vegetarians knew about them, they wouldn't be asking about artificial sources of protein.

They ask questions because they don't know everything right out of the gate. Being a veggie seems to be a complicated formula as to what's ok and what's not ok, and why they are ok and not ok.

tart----the ground loses nutrients by growing and harvesting over and over in the same spot without replenishing the soil. That's why farmers are recommended to rotate their crops. Fertilizers, whether chemical or not, actually replenish the soil. That's why they're called "fertilizers".

Also, could you explain how travel time lowers nutrient content?

Also, "Omnivores also take vitamin supplements because so much nutrition has been stripped from our food."-------that's not true either. Each food has the same nutrition it always did. Spinach is the same. Beef is the same. Carrots are the same. It's the fact that we make poor dietary choices that we need vitamin supplements. Not the food having been stripped of nutrients.

I'm sorry to have to take you to task on this one but it seems like you're making things up.

Because some people think they have to have them. I don't believe it's necessary unless somebody has really bad eating habits or some kind of health problem.

I wouldn't use any supplements like that. Even if I did, I would research how they were made before I tried them.
