I'm having a party at my house tomorrow night. We have a firepit and we plan on making smores. How much wood do I need to keep the fire going for 2 hours? Can I add newspapers and stuff like that too?

Two small bundles of fireplace wood may do it, or get three and you can make another fire for just you another day. You will have a hard time starting a fire if you don't know what you are doing. I like to pour a little lamp oil or kerosene on my wood a few minutes before I light it, then start the kindling, (leaves or paper) to light the fire. It is the easiest way every time to start a fire, and requires little skill or luck. After you get the fire going, do not add any paper, unless you just want to watch it burn.

Here's a plan: go around and find all the little twigs and sticks you can from teeny tiny to wrist size. This will help you on the price if that was your plan to go buy some. Besides you can't just throw big chunks on paper and expect it to burn unless you are like my husband using citronella. Add them even when your larger sizes are burning.

The newspapers are just to start your twigs then add more twigs then a little larger and so on. For two hours you should have enough large wood up to your knee or mid thigh and about lets say 2 feet wide if its all split up. You will need some dry wood(you can tell because its real light) then and some hard wood like oak(heavy). Unsplit logs will last longer just keep your small stuff around to keep it beefed up. It's best to have more than you need because in my experience you always stay longer than you expect especially this time of year when its so nice.

depends on the size of fire you are building. just a couple nice bundles. split hardwoods like oak and hickory would do fine. for all those who mention cords. do you know how much wood that is? it is a 4x4x8 stack it will heat my house in the winter for a week! doubt they need that big of a fire for smores. dont add newspapers and other things that may contain chemicals since you are planning on eating stuff from the fire. also newspaper burning in the wind puts off lots of small hot ash that may cause a fire

This is going to depend on how big a fire you want and what kind of wood you are going to burn. Soft woods like pine will give a very hot fire, but they burn quickly and there will be no coals. Hard woods like oak will burn less hot but for much longer and they will have hot coals.

Nope, you can't add newspaper. The burned paper will fly everywhere and might start a fire.

Unless you have lots of room for a big stack of firewood, buy a case of composite fireplace logs. These little deals made of paraffin wax and sawdust burn for about three hours at a time and come in cases of five or six logs. Get a case or two and you will be OK, expecially if you already have some firewood on hand.

u can get a mini fire with one piece of wood or a huge one with a bunch of tall logs stacked in a cone shape. make shure the cone has enough openings for air. best to douse it with 10oz of rubbing alchohol and use lots of small wood inside the cone. light the cone on the inside. u can add stuff once the wood has colapsed but dont do it until then. also the cone gets u a 5ft fire and it looks awesome.

Pine is a no, I have started with pine before, just to get wood started (and I like the smell), but you want ash, oak, pecan, wal-nut somthing hard. You can use rolled up newspaper, but it will ash flake.

Hope you have a fun party

Do you know how to build a fire?

No - If you didn't ask a Boy Scout to your party, follow Doc's advice.

Yes - about 15 pallets.

It depends how dry and how hard the wood is. I would guess you'd need 6 logs/pieces at least.

well this is going to depend on how many btu's will be required. how may people will be there, how many smores will be roasted. the ambient tempertaure, the prefered temperature, the quality of the wood itself. lot to consider, but at least 3 cubic feet.
