Rock or mountain climbing? On weekends, you can drive up to the Mt. Baldy ski area and take the lift to the notch. Then you can hike up to the top of Mt San Antonio (10,064') 3.2 miles from the notch. Or you can go to Palm Springs, take the tramway to the top, and then hike up to the top of Mt San Jacinto (10,834') about 5 miles from the tramway station. If you want to take an easy hike but see the sights, rocks, trees, and a lake, go up to Big Bear Lake, there's lots of dirt roads trails up in that area. There's also lots of rock climbing in the area too. If you're up to a challenge, climb Mt. Wilson or Mt. Lowe from the Pasadena area, but trailheads are a bit hard to locate. Otherwise, just go to Griffith Park, you can't get lost there unless you're a Boy Scout.
Going up the Palm Springs tramway and then hiking around at the state park at the top can be really spectacular, a terrific place to take your date. Sometimes there's even snow there while it's blazing hot at the desert floor.
