If diabetes goes uncontrolled for a while, or is under bad control then it causes damage to organs in the body, Kidneys being one of them. This is why a lot of older diabetics have to go on dialysis, because in the younger years they either went without diagnosis for al ong time, or didnt take care of themselves for a long time. There could be other factors in this as well, such as other medical conditions or daily habits that led to the kidneys shutting down. I hope that your friend gets on the list and possibly helped, thank you for actually looking into it.

Hi, I am not a diabetic, but i did dialysis for 3years and had a kidney transplant 4 years ago. I guess your friend;s kidneys went bad due to her Diabetes, but she is still young to get on the list for a kidney. 55 years of age is still time to get on the list . Unless someone a family or friend could match. Take care.

Diabetes and high blood glucose levels damage tissues like insides of veins, arteries and cappillaries (like those inside the kidneys). So they can wind up with kidney damage and other places like the eyes, nerve damage, etc. from the high glucose levels doing damage to tissues.
