It seems that it depends on where you look for your figures. Netdoctor (the first url below) states 1.6 million, yet Research and Markets (the second url) states 1.4 million. Diabetes UK (third url) state over two million.

If you ask me, they all have the same date and time for appointments as me. Our diabetes centre (part of our local hospital) is always crowded out when I attend.
