My husband (45 y/o) had an EKG today and told he had an enlarged heart. He is going to have a CT but he is overweight. Does anyone know or have exp with this or have it and is overweight and what were you told? What is there to be expected with the enlarged heart? Will he be ok?

Go with what your Cardiologist tells you and, stay with his advise. I'm not going to interject something as long as you've already seen doctors. Your on the right tract, stay there you'll be O.K.

Is it the entire heart or just the left or right ventricle or atrium? Cardiomegaly has many causes including hypertension, heartvalve disorder, cardiomyopathy, severe anemia, thyroid disorder, hematochromatosis and amyloidosis. In and of itself, it's not necessarily harmful and is not a disease but a sign of an underlying problem.

The symptoms depend on the severity of the enlargement and can include shortness of breath, edema of the legs and ankles, tenderness or pain in the uper right quandrant of the abdomen and even ascites plus the symptoms related to the underlying cause of the cardiomegaly.

Depending on his symptoms and the findings after further investigation he may be placed on medications that could include any one or more of the following: diuretics, ACE inhibitors, Beta blockers and nitrates. His cardiologist will certainly recommend weight loss and may advise a low-sodium diet, fluid restrictions and more exercise.

I can't tell you if he will be okay. I don't know the cause, his present condition and if he will be compliant with treatment. Bring your questions with you when you accompany him to his cardiology consult.

The fact he is over weight may be a contributing factor as with hereditory, diet, smoking etc.
My dad was the fittest guy I knew and his heart enlarged through a hereditory disease at 49, my brother is the second most fittest person I know and is in hospital waiting for a transplant at the young age of 24. This shows the diversity of how heart disease strikes.

lol your really think he'll be ok? Just visit doctor. Overweight is never good by itself. he has enlarged heart because his arteries are cloged up and heart needs mre power to pumb blood. Enlarged heart is really, really bad. He need to loose weight and exercise. He need aerobic exercise (like jogging) to help his heart.

But first of all, visit cardiologist.
