What did average Americans eat in the 1920s? Food historians tell us we had a sweet tooth, a taste for the exotic, and a well-developed sense of ordered creativity. Translation? Fruit cocktails, Pineapple upside-down cake and Jell-O molds. Tea sandwiches, fancy salads, and chafing-dish recipes were also "in." City kitchens were wired with electricity meaning foods could be safely refrigerated at home. General Electric (and other companies) published cooking brochures touting frozen foods and safe meat storage.

Martini's were quite the "in" drink in the 20's, and, although salads were considered "effeminate", the cobb salad was a big hit and the Caesar Salad was created! Here are some ideas for foods that reflect the period when women were liberated by canned goods (think Libby) and finding themselves caught up in the new musical rage (think the Charlston):

1. A martini bar
2. Cheese balls and crackers
3. Individual caesar salad on romaine leaves
4. Pears stuffed with blue cheese bites
5. Toast points and creamed chipped beef
6. Pineapple and green pepper kabobs
7. Stuffed artichokes
8. Mini quiches
9. Pineapple upside down cake bites
10. Cookies and brownie bites

If you are planning a party, the 1920's are great for the gangster theme. Italian food is always a great way to cheat. Keep it simple with spaghetti and cheesecake. Otherwise any peasant style food always has a deep origin and can be passable for the time period.
