She can take any cold medicine that doesn't contain sugar. Some cold remedies come in this formula. Ask the pharmacist for assistance and order it if necessary.

There is no reason that your wife can't have Lemsip or Beechams for a cold if she takes the sugar content into account.
Is she taking any other medication such as for high blood pressure? If she is then this is the reason the pharmacist will of advised her against taking them becaus they will increase her blood pressure.
If your wife is using a blood sugar meter and wishes to take Lemsip I would suggest that she takes it and does a blood sugar test about 20 minutes later to see how it affects her. If her sugar levels have not risen then its fine to take.

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/dwJzV
A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

You didn't mention whether or not she has had a flu shot.
I have type II diabetes and I've never been told what not to take, however I am not allergic to medication.
If the pharmacist told her what NOT to take, did he say which may be useful?
Have her call the Doc and ASK.

go and see your doctor. indeed, diabetes patient is in a immune compromised state, simple cold will need stronger medications. Diabetic patient, esp poorly control can easily prograss into bad infection. Who know may be your wife have other infections rather than common cold? Better examined by a doctor to confirm and get a prescription.
