My mom just bought me some new vitamins. I'm a vegetarian and about the 20th ingredient is gelatin! I have to take them every day. I don't want to tell her because she will get mad. They were pretty expensive vitamins. Any advice?

You can buy vitamin tablets without gelatine, there are many brands to choose from

You don't need to take vitamins tablets if you are having a balanced diet of vegetarian foods.

If i were you, i would point it out to her, thank her for buying them, and offer to go and find a veggie version in the future. i would buy my own veggie ones and leave the other in the back of the cupboard.

Long term, I would think about if I actually need them because like you say, thay can be expensive and there is really no need for them

Ther is no such thing as "gelatin from plant". There are binding agents from plants but these are never called gelatin.

Consider the possiblity the gray.

What I mean by that is many people feel vegetarianism is black or white.

Some people act as if If they eat gelatin in a mulitvitamin it is just as bad as eating veal three meals a day. It is NOT!

Consider this if mom is buying you vitamins it means that to some extent your mom is also get the final say if you are a veggie. Mom is conserned that you are healthy. Make ingrededient 20 an issue and mom might decide you are getting your iron and B12 via beef instead.

The gelatin in those multivitamins game from bones, no animal is killed for the bones, they are killed for the meat, the bones are a waste product buying gelatin does not encourage animal farming.

The reason to be a vegitarian is to reduce the DEMAND for the products, throwing out something after you buy it creats the same demand as buying it and using it. The native american culture considered eating animals to be ethical, but it was immoral to kill an animal and NOT use it. That is what you would be doing.

If the bottle/box is not yet opened it can likely be returned, if that is the case, by all means ask mom to exchange it.

But if it is open, eat the vitamins, tell mom about teh gelatin and ask her to involve you in the purchase of the NEXT bottle.

Yeah, all of those kind of vitamins contain gelatin, unfortunately. GNC has some that don't, of the regular kind. If you're shopping at Walmart, as is obvious considering it's equate brand, you COULD get the um "silver." It doesn't contain gelatin, for some reason, and so far as I know, there's nothing in it that will hurt a youthful body; it's just designed for older individuals.

There are a number of vegan vitamins available. If you haven't opened the package, ask your mom if she can return them (or you return them) and find a brand that doesn't have gelatin.

www.veganstore.com and www.veganessentials.com both have reasonably priced vegan vitamins. You may also be able to find some at your local health food store.

Find out the company. Some companies use vegetable based gelatin, so you might be okay!

If not, you can't take them, so just let her know.

*Now, Gelatin is animal based, but what I am saying is that some companies use alternatives but still call it gelatin. Like Agar-Agar. Not likely, but you never know.

The gelatin should be ok. Most capsules are made from plant material. Gelatin in vitamins is usually, from what I've read, is plant unless otherwise specified as a beef or pork product.
