I have seen/heard some pretty ridiculous claims made by people regarding their dogs. What is the strangest or most laughable old wives tale that you have ever heard about dogs?

I'll get it started - EATING RAW MEAT WILL MAKE DOGS BLOOD THIRSTY.

"Used motor oil is good for everything from mange to ringworm to fleas."

How stupid is THAT?

Amen, St.Lady.

"Shave your double coated dog, it will make him cooler in the summer".

We won't mention the fact that I RAN a Samoyed in agility trials in ARIZONA in 95 degree heat against a ton of different dogs... She was spayed and in full glorious 6 inch long and super thick coat. (grooming spayed Sam b*tches... bleh!!!) She did MUCH better than the black Labs and Border Collies surviving the heat.

My personal favorite is "Have you ever heard of using Turpentine on a dog's tick bites to take the pain out?"

That one actually out ranked the statement to use Sevan dust on 2 week old puppies for fleas.

"If a dog likes to bite other animals, then I'm next on their list!!"

Animal aggression does not equal people aggression!!

This also ties into the "give 'em raw meat, and you'll be next!"

And my top one? "Bathing a dog dries out its' coat! Don't bathe them!"
This was true back when we used harsh shampoos.. but today, they are suited to your dog's coat. Their pH is lower, and does not dry out the skin. It's ok to bathe your dogs every week, as I do.

That you can come on YA and give an honest answer about dogs and it is helpful and appreciated by the others. It usually gets you thumbs down and violation notices. The truth isn't wanted here, just validation for the other wives tales they believe.

A couple variations on this one.

A dog with a black mouth is smarter than a dog with a pink mouth.

A lab with a black mouth is purebred, a lab with a pink mouth isn't.

Purebreds shouldn't have meat, it'll give them worms. But you can feed meat to a mutt, they won't get worms from it.

That's a good one. Ever heard someone claim that dogs can't look up? haha

I hear ALL the Time that a female dog should go through one heat cycle and have at least one litter of puppy before they are spayed.

This one makes me cringe, but I once heard that feeding your dog cigarette butts will get rid of worms.

A dog licking a wound will disinfect the wound

If you give a dog peanut butter it will drive them crazy and make them vicious. Because they get so frustrated when their mouth is sealed shut it drives them crazy. LOL

Eating potatoes will give dogs worms.
I've heard the same thing about bread, sugar, etc.

Ooh-ooh..I just remembered my fave.
Once a female has a mixed breed litter, she can never have purebreds.
