Cows' milk is for baby cows. Dairy cows are kept constantly pregnant, doped up with hormones to increase production and antibiotics because of the infections from repeated milkings. So there's blood, pus, antibiotics, and hormones in your milk. And yes, it encourages the veal trade, as the sons of dairy cows often are sent off to the veal crates.
Eggs are very cruelly produced. Hens are crammed in cages, with each bird getting roughly the space of a sheet of typing paper. Baby male layer chicks are killed at birth since they don't lay eggs and don't grow big enough fast enough to be profitable. For an egg industry expose, check out www.cok.net.

I made the switch for a few reasons. I was really bothered by the environmental irresponsibility of big agribusiness and realized that I was contributing to it be eating eggs from huge laying operations and drinking milk from huge dairy operations. Also, there is extraordinary cruelty involved in both egg and dairy production. Laying hens are debeaked so that they can be stuffed into small cages with a bunch of other hens and not peck each other to death. Many of them break legs and wings in those cages because they are so crammed in. Male chicks are not useful to a laying operation, so they are discarded to starve or suffocate. Similarly, male calves have no value to a dairy operation so they are taken from their mothers and sold to be raised for veal. Overcrowding and unnatural diets mean that the animals have to be treated with antibiotics to keep disease from spreading and cows are pumped full of hormones to increase milk production; both the anitbiotics and hormones end up in the human food supply. Cows are artificially inseminated to keep them lactating and instead of living 20 years like they're supposed to, they are so worn out by 5 or 6 that they're sold for cheap beef. Plus, eggs and dairy are full of saturated fat and cholesterol and don't add anything to the diet that can't be gotten elsewhere. It all finally added up for me and I made the switch from long-time lacto-ovo vegetarian to vegan.

wow cool, I'm a vegetarian and I'm currently thinking about becoming vegan as well. being vegan helps your skin a lot!!!
for some reason when you dont eat meat you get a nice shine to your skin, and your skin is a lot more smoother. I'm not sure why, but this is what motivated me to becoming vegan. i mean I'm vegetarian and i get a lot of compliments on my skin, i just want to have smoother shinier skin. there are a lot of benefits.

It's usually just to avoid all animal products. Some veggies go with eggs and fish (I don't), but veganism cuts it all out, no milk, cheese, butter, either (I couldn't live without milk and cheese!). They are justified because they don't buy into the animal farming industry with its cruelty.
