KOEHLER DOGTRAINING: it's not about fundraising. Some pit bull rescues might also have fundraising at their event. It's about educating your community on the breed. If there was more of this there would be no breed bans and no BSL.

JOHN: you are a fine example of ignorance! A Great Dane mauled it's owner for no reason, so we should ban Great Dane's too, huh, for one's actions we should just ban the whole breed. You wouldn't want that to happen since you OWN one, now would you?

Also, my husband came home covered in blood one day. My Mom's Great Dane & Australian Shepherd, for no reason attacked her Jack Russell. They had her mid air trying to rip her apart. She had holes and rips all over her body and broke ribs. If my husband hadn't been their she would have been killed. Sounds like John's cituation doesn't it, only his was pit bulls. ANY dog can be a killer.

Great gesture. Now, if all of those event planners would sponsor a Bully Performance Team (put together from local club membership) , then y'all could get good recognition 52 weeks/year at AKC and UKC sanctioned shows. From these various performance teams can be formed an elite drill team to perform at specialty events, grand openings, etc.. That'll get you televised coverage as often as you can book performances.

But no, all the funds are being sent to ADOA to be spent on lawyers (many of which don't even own a dog) and organizing events which will get one day's attention; from which, undoubtedly, more donations will be solicited, ear marked for more attorneys. And the performance team, though a good idea, remains one man's thoughts of an un-funded project :(

edit: Then focus on my first paragragh. Think it through. Contact me privately if you want to learn how to really do some educating while getting your local communities excited, in a positive way, about the breed.

It worked for the Doberman Pinscher back in the late 60's and through the 70's, when they were the principle target of breed bans. And it can work for the APBT today. Why/how? Because it appeals directly to the court of public opinion. THE court which most threatens you ... in case you haven't noticed it.

Edit: Blessed, I hope your ability to 'educate' is better than your written ability to 'communicate,' because you aren't handling this very well. Perhaps you should encourage one of the event organizers to help you field some of these responses? I certainly hope that your people will be better listeners, and actually pay attention to the folks wishing to express their concerns and experiences at these various venues.

Arguing a point without first establishing any credibility is very poor negotiating. That is, you inderstand, what you should be doing, negotiating some middle ground between Fanciers of the breed and proponents of BSL. More importantly, you need to be able to sway the non dog owning public to support your cause because they:

1: Know little about the breed other than what they read in the paper and watch on the news; and
2: They vote; and
3: They represent a larger block of voteers than Fanciers and BSL-proponents combined.

I will be joining a group back home in Cleveland when on leave for Pit Bull Awareness day. Hope it shows the trueness about the breed and shuts the open mouths of all the ignorant people out there. Time to put these bigots to bed once and for all.

I was glad to see that someone is picking this up in the Houston area. THANK YOU for posting the links!
Though Texas has anti-BSL law at a State level, City by City, there are places attempting to ban certain breeds in urban area, and not only APBT's.

This is Such a Great idea!! And my birthday is Oct. 22 which just makes it more fun for me. I am going to talk to my local Humane Society, where I adopted my pit bull, and see if they would be interested in participating. They are one of the only animal shelters in my area who actually adopt out Pit Bulls. Thank you so much for posting this!

I think that's great! The more people to put the word out on Pits the better. They are not the monsters they are portrayed in the media or the one in a million attack, which by the way can be ANY breed! Thanks for the info!

Blessed

I am sad - I am going to be out of town travelling on October 20th but my roommate is going to contact our Pacific NW Pitbull rescue to see what they have planned for that day. If I get back and they are doing a candlelight vigil - I'll be there.

Thanks for bringing this to everyone's attention!

I am not for ANY breed specific legislation. However, your attack on John was not fair. If you put yourself in his shoes, for just a moment, you would see the situation with a little more compassion. There is no reason for you to get rude with him just because he wants to spread the word that pit bulls attacked his own dog, in his own yard, and killed his cat. I can guarantee that if it had happened to you, you would be just as angry.
Keeping your head in the sand, and ignoring that there is a REAL problem with irresponsible people owning pit bulls does more harm for the breed than any 'breed day' can ever accomplish...They are NOT the dog for everybody.
Please read this Yahoo Answers thread, posted by a well known pit bull breeder:

Why do you think they are the number one dog ( by far!) in shelters? It is because of irresponsible breeders and owners. All the media hype..is because of irresponsible breeders and owners. The attack on John's dog and cat, was because of irresponsible breeders and owners. It is NOT the media that is at fault..It is irresponsible breeders and owners.

I'm not sure how this will go down ............ but its like devil work ship day ,
lets pretend these dogs arnt out of control !!!
my Dane was ripped apart ,by two of these ,so called well behaved sweet dogs ...
they jumped over my 6ft fence, one had him by the neck ,the other by the chest ,and just kept on tearing flesh from him ,
we sued the owners, and guess what they said,
"they have never done any thing like this before"
maybe not in this life?
it cost me well over $1600 to fix my Dane ,at my vets
PITT BULL AWARENESS DAY , REALLY SUCKS
in my house , if i had to choose to ban the breed,
give me a pen ill sign up for that one......
