Hello, I am so so scared at the moment.I had unprotected sex with a bouncer and now I am so scared that I could have caught diseases. Especially HIV? I have been having a sore throat and my hands have that "pins and needles" feeling in them. I am taking a trip down to the GU clinic on Monday but wondered if anyone could put my mind at risk. I have slept with 10 people and used protection. I know i never had anything before having un-protected sex. I cant think straight. I just wondered if anybody would be able to tell me what my chances are in getting HIV? Please help

the odds are in your favor, the chances of you catching HIV are 1/37000, that's including the chance of him even having HIV, and including the chance of infection after 1 exposure, catching HIV after one exposure is highly unlikely, most of the people that catch HIV are either in a relationship or engage in high risk acts such as unprotected anal with a known infected partner or drug injected user, so i'm confident enough to say you didn't catch HIV, just remember to use protection at all times so you don't even have to worry about whether you catch HIV or not.

and by the way, your complications do not suggest any kind of HIV symptoms, and by you telling me those symptoms further lets me know that you don't have HIV.

The sore throat could just be a cold-virus. The pins and needles could be caused by anxiety especially if you have any other symptoms e.g. sweating, raised-pulse. Get it checked-out to put your mind at rest. You can only catch HIV or a STD if the person you slept with has already got it and even then you might not catch it anyway. Why not speak to the guy you slept with? If you've only had unprotected sex once then the chances of catching anything must be very slim. Always use protection in the future.

there are normally no symtoms with HIV, that is why there are so many people walking around with it and not knowing. It is a good idea to have a test done at least 1x a year, but if you just had sex with the man and it has been less than 6 months ago the chances of anyhing showing up yet is very small. If you are really worried get a test now and then test again in 6 months. The chances of getting HIV are very small anyways, in order to get it, there would have to be some kind of blood to blood transfer. I would be more worried about getting herpes, or goneria than the HIV. It is never a good idea to have unprotected sex especially during a one night stand. \

I hate to scare you, but even with protected sex you can still get HIV (1 in 250 condoms are allowed by US Law to have holes large enough to allow HIV to pass and the lubricant can actually increase the risks) but, your encounter unprotected with a bouncer is a high risk, as high risk as me having sex with a needle drug sharing prostitute unprotected, knowing she has HIV.

Know also that it will take a minimum of 6 months to detect any exposure to HIV, and yet you can start passing it if you have it yourself.

However, you symptoms of sore throat and pins and needles could be associated with the physical act of sex. remember also anxiety can cause these symptoms too.

Do get yourself checked. and also, add to your routine, a blood exam for HIV every 3 months and don't stop just cause you've gone six months. some cases don't show for years.

It is too bad we don't live in a society where we all carry cert cards showing that we are on this 3 month test routine so we can check on who we might sleep with, but...

In light of some of the other suggestions, let me amend mine...

Do NOT try to use blood donations as a way to tell if you have a disease or not. Among other things, it is illegal.

And yes, test for other diseases as well. in two to four weeks test for pregnancy. If you show positive for pregnancy, see a doctor to rule out ectopic problems (it is not prolific but can occur without knowing it).

You already know that unprotected sex isn't a good idea so I won't harp on :-)! Go for your clinic interview and talk things through. All I can say is that you would be very unlucky to have contracted HIV from this encounter, we all make mistakes and mostly things are OK and we learn from them.
HIV testing is not definitive until 6 weeks after the exposure so if you have a wait don't stress. Talk to friends and then put it to the back of your mind. More than likely time will go by, you will be negative and kick yourself so wasting all that time stressing! Odds are in your favour. Look after yourself and talk things through with someone you trust. Get all the tests and clue yourself up.
Best of luck.

white tongue = oral thrush. can come from aids but not from hiv infection - ie you have to go past hiv and develop the immune disorder by which time you would have positive blood test for sure. So there is no reason to think you are positive. Antibiotics are FAR more likely to cause oral thrush than anything else. Malnutrition, poor living conditions can also be the problem....

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there is definately a chance of HIV. You just have to hope that the bouncer didn't have it...

Definately go to the clinic, get them to take your blood tests and they should put you on a drug protocol. You will then need to get tested again in 3 months, it takes that long for it to show up in your system.

I don't know the numerical odds but I know that one episode of unprotected sex is enough for all the diseases you say you fear, and for pregnancy, too. If you are not old enough, mature enough, and/or wise enough to use protection EVERY TIME, you need to stop having sex until you have enough gumption to deal with it. You need help, all right, but not the kind you think, and nothing you will find here.

Edit: Well said, Johnnette Z

Panic has never helped a situation. You must get tested. There is a chance of contracting HIV and an even greater chance of having contracted another STD so don't jest get an HIV test, get tested for HEP C, chlamydia, gonorrhea, syhpiliis, HPV, and so forth....Not to mention pregnancy....
