Yes, by using a machine to allow oxygen into your system you can become very ill if you get too much because you are also breathing in co2 gas. I ended up in the hospital with my heart not pumping right due to this. Stick with the exact amount of oxygen that your Dr has prescribed for you. Are you suppose to be on it 24/7? If you're not then don't,otherwise the co2 will build up in your system and please talk with your Dr or those who supply your oxygen for more info!

Contrary to all these other answers, I have been in prehospital medicine for over 11 years and there is no such thing as too much oxygen. When your hemoglobin is full, your hemoglobin is full. A normal healthy body uses the presence of CO2 to dictate the respiratory drive.
The ONLY POSSIBLE EXCEPTION would be in patients with chronic respiratory issues such as emphysema. In this case, the body is using O2 levels to dictate the respiratory drive. If there is too much oxygen, they can stop breathing.

Yeah, be very careful. Oxygen is actually poisonous.
It's ironic how we need it to survive...but it is toxic.
ONLY do what your doctor tells you to. Trust me, do not overdose on ANY prescription, including Oxygen.

over a long period of time it can cause complications... you did not mention how you were getting it and how much... 2-6 lpm on a nc would be a better long term choice than 15 lpm via nrb... also is it constant or only when you need it?

YES. Your doc must prescribe the dosage. Too much will burn your lungs and cause more damage.
