I'm glad to hear it wasn't a heart attack...but it doesn't mean he's out of the woods yet.
You're best bet would be to wait till you find out what it is.
Could be a number of things...I don't think it would be cancer, but I could be mistaken.
Ive had 2 pulminary embolisms, (blood clot in the vein of my lungs) and it caused quite a bit of pain along with shortness of breath......i'm on medication for life now to prevent getting another blood clot.
I dont' want to diagnose your fathers illness...but I hope all is ok* Just wait till you hear what the results of all his tests are*~
GoodLuck Best Wishes*

Whoever said that "heart attacks send ya to the hospital because u fall on the floor & start shaking you heart attacks dont appear that often" is absolutely incorrect. First of all, it is possible to have a heart attack and not even know it right away. Especially becuase your symptoms became noticebly worse today, you should go to the ER immediately. Also, know that stress can definitely be a factor in causing heart attacks. 28 is not too young to have a heart attack. There are state and federal programs to help pay for occurances like this. If this takes you away from work for any period of time a vocational rehab program can usually cover lots of costs (medicine, cardiac rehab, hospitilizations...) When I was 20 years old I had a heart attack. I was very active and was under a lot of stress at the time. It began by my feeling 'funny' and a little dizzy. Then BOTH of my arms felt tingly (not just the left one). Eventually the tingly feeling turned into pain across both arms and my chest. I didn't go to the ER right away because (like you) I assumed it was not a huge deal. 8 hours later, I went. I was lucky I didn't get there much later and damage was minimal. Bottom line, get off the computer and go to the ER immediately.

You don't really say to much. Your dad has been around the block, that's for sure. Being a heavy drinker I'm sure he had or has stomach problems? like heartburn?
You have a nerve that runs along your esophagus to your neck, it can act like a heart problem when you get heart burn.
A heavy smoker, I would make a bet he has a touch of asthma and maybe even emphysema, the doctor could check these both with a X-Ray. He has history, that's for sure, that could mask a number of problems that you just can't address here.

if the doctors are beyond the point of being concerned of heart attack and stroke you probably don't need to put your life on hold immediately and fly out to see him on the next flight. even if he does have lung cancer, it's highly unlikely it would be life threatening within the next day or two. has he been admitted to icu/ccu? are the doctors recommending a pacemaker, by-pass surgery, angioplasty, etc? are you able to get more info to figure out if you can wait a couple days or a week or if his condition is immediately life threatening? chest pain, while it is something to take serious, is often something that is resolved during the er visit. you need to find out more to know if this is the case and then you can make the right decision. it would suck to fly across the country because of something minor like angina but would be horrible to not go if it's serious. get more info.

Do what you have to do.. but if it is not his heart, then he is not in immediate danger of dieing from his ailment..but he really needs to get those lungs checked.. and to answer you question.. if he has cancer, it depends on the type and how fast it is growing.. no it is not too late.. there are lots of great treatments available.. just get his lungs checked first.. whether he wants to or not.. this is not going to go away by itself.. good luck

You don't have enough information here to answer your question. Ask your dad what all the doctors told him about his lung problem and then try to make an informed decision, but without more diagnostic information nobody on here can give you the answers that you want. If you feel you need to travel to see your Dad.....do it.

You did not mention if they admitted him. With his past history it could be almost anything. From Heartburn to pneumonia. However he has to be diagnosed by a doctor. And even if it is the worse, depending on how long the disease has been there and if it is treatable he could be around a long time. I would wait at least until he sees another doctor, unless your concerns are just overwhelming then go with your heart and go there
