Most people are more insulin resistant in the morning. It's your circadian hormones (such as cortisol) blocking the action of insulin. These hormones are active in the morning to help you wake up.

Yes, the first 3 people who answered you are correct. Also note if you have lost weight recently and the times that you are taking the Met. Monitor your BG's before bed time and keep a journal.
Another reason can be from your own body. If you've lost weight recently or have a little more stress, your liver will be doing a glucagon "dump" on you. The liver is another organ that is affected by the amount of insulin/sugar in the body.
When the bodys sugar level has dropped, the liver will start to output amounts of glucagon into the system to regulate itself.
This happened to me when I lost 10 pounds and was on Metformin. I am now NOT on any medication and can monitor my BG's thru diet.
Either way, please keep a journal and see your doctor.

This happens to me to and my specialist told me it's because I get low in the middle of the night/early morning and my liver puts out the sugar I need. She had me waking at 3 am every morning for a week just to check my levels to see if this was the case and it was.

Your morning glucose levels are most likely high in the morning, as your body is still processing the foods that you did ingest the day before.
Keep on doing what you are doing and write down this question to ask your doctor the next time you see him/her.
You don't specify how high your levels are, but as long as you are not showing any other symptoms, ( you say that your levels are fine for the rest of the day) I wouldn't stress too much about it. Just make sure you advise your doctor of your glucose readings .
Good luck.

An hour before checking your blood sugar in the morning, you may jog or brisk walk for 15 minutes.
Exercise makes the existing insulin work more effectively.
