chf is a condition that your heart is in and will remain in. if you have CHF, common symptoms are sob, but they generally don't relieve them self. usually you end up in the hospital because you fill up fill fluid so much in your lungs you feel like you could drown in your own fluid. lasix is a the most common drug to relieve symptoms of chf. with your legs swelling, at a sit down job, your feet swell as a sign of poor circulation. mainly because your hips are always bent, slowing down blood flow to your feet. pressure builds up and your capillaries began to leak fluid and it accumulated in your ankles and legs, which is why when your walking around or sleeping, your hips are straight and there is no resistance. try taking some aspirin. i take aspirin when i am going to be sitting a lot on a road trip on at a desk to prevent blood clots and poor circulation. over time, constant resistance or pressure in your legs could cause a clot which can be very dangerous. good luck

CHF is a result (symptom) of other diseases, not exactly a disease by itself. It can be caused by having too many heart attacks that damage the heart muscle, cardiomyopathy which is defined as either dilate, hypertrophic, or idiopathic. It could be caused by a virus which damages the heart or the sack around the heart or the valves which causes them to leak too much blood back and thus damages the heart, or it can be caused by many medications such as those for HIV, cancer, arthritis, kidney disease, or diabetes. This is an extreme condensation of the many causes of heart failure. Actually they really need a better word, because when most people here it they think of death.
Also just because your feet swell does not mean you have heart failure. Since you sit down alot, what could be happening is the lymph nodes might not be draining the fluid as efficiently as it should. Simply rebuilding your stamina by walking for exercise will solve that problem. However if you are overweight, and sit down alot that will make the problem worse and is even more important that you move that body.
But if you want to rule out CHF you will need to have either an x-ray or an echo-cardiogram. Also with heart failure when they do blood tests there are markers that they look for first. Another thing, if you have undiagnosed sleep apnea that will also cause SOB and swelling. Have that checked too with a sleep study.

RE:
Is congestive heart failure a symptom or a disease itself?
What are some of the symptoms? I have breathing problems & sometimes my feet swell big. I work nights at a sit down job and I think that may be why my feet swell because when I get sleep and am moving around they dont do it.

Congestive heart failure is a state of condition of your heart... It means your heart is overworked and enlarging or swelling, sometimes working at a limited capacity... When someone is in congestive failure, prompt treatment (surgery, meds) are a neccesity.
Some of the symptoms are night sweating, hands or feet turning blue, shallow breathing, weight loss

I've had CHF for the past 6 yrs and i had a major heart attack a silent one which should have killed me but didn't and i didn't even know i had one.about 2 wks later i went swimming at the river and caught pneumonia and was put in the hospital, then a heart dr from out of town happen to be there that day and he look at my exrays and all and said i didn't need to be at that hospital, instead i needed to be at his hospital.come to find out i had one blocklage and 10 months later had a mechanical heart valve put in me,since then i've had to go back and forth and have blood work done and take all kinds of medicines for my heart and stay inside where it is cool. But CHF is a Heart Diease and nothing to play around with.to learn more about it go to this website:

It is a pretty serious disease. The failing heart keeps working but not as efficiently as it should. People with heart failure can't exert themselves because they become short of breath and tired.

It is a disease itself. Your symptoms are more on the left sided type where it affects the pulmonary function. When your feet swell, there is accumulation of fluids in the body and you need to take an extra HCTZ for a weight of 2 to 3 pounds in just one day, restrict sodiun in the diet and elevate feet to reduce swelling.
