It is perfectly healthy as long as you have a balanced vegetarian diet.
"It is the position of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada that appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases.... Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood and adolescence."

I don't know your age, but if you really watch what you eat and make sure you get your proteins being a vegetarian can be healthy. Yes many humans are omnivores, but many people choose not to eat meat. As for the animals, yes they will die anyways (as will everything on this planet at some point) they do not need to suffer as much as they do when they are raised for food. Also, personally, I would rather not eat meat that comes from an animal that has been treated with hormones and things like that. If she really won't let you become a vegetarian, maybe you two can compromise and you can eat free range chicken and eggs. They seem to be better for you than cage raised chickens.

1. Well, I went vegetarian when I was 9 and I'm perfectly healthy. I'm sure you'll find others here too. Maybe bring up to her that many kids are raised vegetarian from birth and are still perfectly healthy?
2. Humans are omnivores, meaning we can eat both meat and vegetables. Again, maybe mention there's many humans that have survived on a vegetarian diet?
3. Think of it this way, if there's a dip in how much meat is eaten in America, what is the meat industry going to do? They're going to produce less meat if demand declines. Maybe one vegetarian can't do that, but they can join a group of thousands and they can teach others about vegetarianism.
You have to respect what your mother says because she does want what's best for you. Research some of her claims though, and try to have a fair and sound conversation with her about them.

If you have any vegetarian friends around your age, maybe they can give you advice & also they'd be living proof that it can be perfectly healthy to be vegetarian @ any age. I know some kids who have never eaten meat in their lives & were born to vegetarian or vegan moms & I've never seen a diet-related health problem in any of them. Actually, they're all pretty healthy in general.
Protein isn't nearly as big a challenge as some ppl might tell you. Every time I keep track of my nutritional intake, I discover I'm getting much more than I need. As long as you eat a varied & nutritious diet, you'll be getting plenty.
When I was old enough to understand what meat *is* I didn't want to eat it any more, but was told that everybody in the world eats it or they get sick & die. End of conversation, since I didn't know any vegetarians & was young enough to think my parents knew everything.
Good luck.

I'm 13 and my mom and dad are the same way. I have wanted to be a vegetarian forever. So far, I've been vegetarian for 2 months. My Dad hasn't fully accepted it but my mom is getting close.
If you want to convince your Mom that vegetarians are healthy,
1. Do some research. Show her this: http://www.seventeen.com/health-sex-fitness/questions-answers/nhqa-042607 and other websites relating to the issue.
2. Tell her you will take iron supplements. They arn't fun but, they help.
3. You may think this is bad but, I just refused to eat meat.
4. Tell her it's what you believe in.
5. Say if they love you, they will let you do what you think is right.
6. Tell her the animals can die naturally. Not by being beheaded to be chopped up.
Also, if you do become vegetarian, there are hidden animal products in many foods. Like, did you know that jell-o and marshmallows contain gelatin which is ground up animal bones? Disgusting, I know. Take a look at this list, it has more hidden products:http://www.dfwnetmall.com/veg/hiddenanimalsinfood.htm.
I wish you the best of luck!

1. A diet high in cholesterol and fat is not healthy for anyone especially someone your age. You can get all of your nutrients from vegetables, legumes, whole grains, and nuts. A balanced diet is the key to any diet. Here is a web site that will help you learn more about what you need at your age.
http://www.vrg.org/family/kidsindex.htm
2. Humans were not meant to eat meat. Our canine teeth are not true distinct canines but are rounder and more cone shaped for tearing foliage. The chemical linning of the digestive tract is also not designed to properly digest meat and it takes several days for meat to flush through the body. This causes blockages in the digestive tract that prevents your body from absorbing nutrients from it's food. It also creates bacterial build-up and can even lead to colon cancer. Plants however take less than a day to digest. Even in the bible god intended for man to eat a vegetarian diet. Man was punished for his disobedience by the flood which cleared out the crops. God also punished man by telling him to eat meat but it must already be dead and "for every slain beast I will require the lifeblood of man." Man was not to kill animals but could eat dead flesh until the crops returned. He intended for man to convert back to a vegetarian diet.
3. Yes, everything dies but these animals should not live torturous lives and be murdered. They should be treated with compassion and humanely. Don't give up on what you believe in. Arm yourself with knowledge. Good luck.

Depending how old you are your mom may not want to let go of you, and you having independant thoughts she may not understand you new ideals. First try eating less meat and find some articles that talk about the benefits of beinga vegetarian to help your mom understand. If she doesn't , just remember that one day you'll be on your own and off to college and can do as you please. Until then, for your own sanity, just do what she says, it'll make life easier.

I dont know how to reply on all this...
1.Its not healthy {at least not in my age}
there a a TON of books and information on how to raise healthy vegetarian/vegan children. go on line & look them up, or go to the library & check out a few books on the subject. prepare yourself to defend your position to your mom. arm yourself with information, not arguments.
2.Humans were meant to eat meat, thats natural and we can't change it {um,ok,what?}
humans were NEVER meant to eat meat, sugar. again, do your HOMEWORK. our teeth were not designed to chew meat, & our digestive systems were not designed to process meat. as a matter of fact, meat will sit in the large intestine up to seven days & your colon continues to re-digest toxins, which in turn affects all of your organs, including your skin.
3.These animals are going to die anyway,and me not eating meat is not helping.
not eating meat is better for you in the long run. fresh live fruits & vegetables contain enzymes that support healthy body function & assists the body in creating it's own protein building blocks called amino acids. the key is knowing how to properly combine you food for maximum results. so guess what? again, YOU have to do your HOMEWORK.
vegetarianism should not be entered into lightly, ill-advised, or uninformed. but once you arm yourself with INFORMATION, then you can make healthy & intelligent decisions.
i'm rooting for you, k?

I wonder why you want to be a vegeterian. A vegetarian lifestyle is certainly very healthy -but it's not as easy as just not eating meat anymore. If you want to be a vegeterian and still get all the nutrients you need, especially if you are a kid, you need to understand a bit about nutritrion. Why don't you try to just eat less meat and see how that goes.

Part of being a vegetarian has to do with respect. How can you respect your mother and still respect animals? Maybe you could speak with her and see if you, your doctor and your mom can all sit down together to come up with a solution that works for all of you.
