It depends on many different things. If he takes care of himself and has regular check ups he might be around for several more years.
My grandmother was in the hospital several times for heart failure. The doctor was always amazed that she responded to therapy so well and would rally and go home. She was in her 80's and lived about three years with her heart failure.

Your father in law does not have heart failure......he may have heart desease but even so he may live for dozens of years.

The less fat he consumes, the longer he may live.
