Yeast cultures, while alive, aren't animals. According to taxonomic scientists yeasts are part of the kingdom Fungi, making them more closely related to mushrooms than animals. That means they are fair game for vegans.

Yeast is a form of fungi and is therefore a plant, not an animal.
So I would say the vegan philosophy would not be against eating yeast bread.

To me, yeast cultures are living, but they have not been found to be able to feel pain and suffering like the other creatures we avoid eating. They are also not caged, imprisoned, or mistreated. They are a being much like plants and therefore most vegans have no problem eating breads that contain them. Everything we eat was once living, but not all of them feel fear, pain, or torture. I do not speak for all vegans, obviously. This is just my humble opinion.

yeast is a living organism, correct.
but its not an animal. although i would agree science has debated this point for 40 years so you can find any number of reports than point both ways, generally speaking they now all agree that yeast is plant life and not animal life.
So yes, vegetarians and vegans will eat yeast.

I'm a vegan. As a vegan I don't eat animals or animal "products". Yeast isn't an animal or an animal product - so I can eat it.

Well vegans avoid eating anything from the animal kingdom, so that wouldn't apply to what vegans won't eat.

Not meaning to come off bitchy... but vegitables were living organisms too! Yeast, like vegitables, just didnt have a pulse or personality.
