If you are just speaking about HSV1 which is typically associated with oral herpes, aka cold sores then.....yes, you could still get this if there were no signs of symptoms. T"here are several days throughout the year when the virus reactivates yet causes no symptoms (called asymptomatic shedding, viral shedding, or asymptomatic reactivation). "
..it's pretty common though, " About 50 percent to 80 percent of the adult population in the United States has oral herpes, with as many as 90% having the virus by age 50."

However, the article states, " Because most adults have oral herpes, we do not advise that a person stop giving or receiving affection altogether between outbreaks (when there are no signs or symptoms) simply because they have oral herpes. "

---personal story...I have never had a cold sore in my life. I'm 31 years old and have kissed a ton of girls throughout my short life span and to this day I don't have oral herpes. I honestly didn't even know what herpes was in college. So, I think it's pretty safe to say you can keep on kissing people.
-->Maybe (since you are asking, and are more educated on the subject) just be more aware of someones lips, be aware of what a cold sore looks like, do some research and just try and avoid contact if you see something fishy on their lips. Can't hurt to be proactive now can it?

Good luck

Beware of false information!

Herpes Zoster is NOT the STD. It is shingles- a painful skin irritation that usually affects the shoulders. It can occur in people who have had chicken pox (yet another form of herpes.)

A "cold sore" is Herpes Simplex Virus 1, genital herpes is Herpes Simplex Virus 2. They are both a herpes simplex virus.

You can catch HSV1 or HSV2 from someone who has it at any time! They are more contagious when they have sores, but can shed the virus at any time. HSV1 ("cold sores") are usually found around the mouth, but can be transferred to the genitals. In fact, that is becoming a very common way of developing herpes sores on the genitals. It does not turn into HSV2, it is just HSV1 in a different location.

Because HSV1 is normally oral, if you do contract it in the genital area, outbreaks are less common because it doesn't thrive as well there. Same with HSV2. It can be spread to the mouth, but it doesn't thrive there, so outbreaks are far less common.

Yes, you can, I am absolutely positive. Sometimes when you have no symtoms present, the virus is still present on your skin, it is known as 'asymptomatic shedding' of the virus because it happens when symptoms are not present. People infected with oral herpes are infecitous about 18% of the time, and you don't have sores all that time. How infectious people are between outbreaks varies. Up to 80% of people with oral herpes do not have anything they recognise as symptoms, but they are still infectious as aften as people who get regular sores.

I caught genital herpes from receiving oral sex from my boyfriend, and he had no symptoms at the time. I have now had genital herpes type 1 for 2 years.

I couldn't fault B.J.C.'s answer, it is accurate in every way and should tell you all you need to know.

I got clinically diagnosed with the herpes simplex virus (type 2) about six years ago, when I was still attending college and had a stupid one-night stand. I just made a massive mistake that one time and suddenly I felt like I was going to have to live with the consequences for the rest of my life. The worst part was feeling I could never date guys again. In the end, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her you-know-what? But since a friend shared this video everything changed https://tr.im/TreatmentHERPES2o15x6hH

Not only was I able to clear away all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating once more. I even met the man of my dreams. This method provided me the opportunity to be happy and experience real love. Now I want to enable you too by sharing this with the whole World.

I got clinically diagnosed with herpes (type 2) about five years back, when I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. I understand a lot of young ladies will say this, but I swear I had never done that sort of thing before. I just made a massive mistake that one time and all of a sudden it seemed like I was going to have to live with the implications for the rest of my life. The hardest part was feeling I could never date guys again. After all, who wants to go out with someone that has sores around her private parts? But since a friend shared this movie https://tr.im/EGAaf everything changed.

Not only was I able to eradicate all traces of the hsv from my body in less than 21 days, but I was also able to begin dating again. I even met the guy of my dreams and I'm so lucky to write that just last week, in front of everyone in a packed restaurant, he got down on one knee and proposed to me!!! This method provided the opportunity to be happy and experience true love. Now I want to help you too by sharing this with the World.

The short answer to your question is definitely, YES.

There is some incorrect information in some of the repsonses I would like to address.

First of all, the viruses that cause herpes infection are HSV-1 and HSV-2 (herpes simplex virus). Both of these can cause genital herpes infections. The delineation between HSV-1 and HSV-2 as either oral or genital viruses is becoming more and more out of date. In some places around the world, 70% of herpes genital infections are caused by the so called oral virus (HSV-1) [Norway]. This trend has been seen in most areas of the world, though there is still definitely marked differences around the world.

As far as when transmission of HSV occurs, the answer is it can occur at any time. In one large study, transmission in 70% of patients appeared to result from sexual contact during periods where there was no visible outbreak (asymptomatic viral shedding). That is why it is strongly recommended that people living with HSV (oral or genital) abstain from contact ("sexual" or otherwise---eg. kissing if you have cold sores) during the period of an outbreak (from the first sign of tingling, burning, itching until the lesions have completely healed). And at non-outbreak times, they should be advised to use protection 100% of the time --- though this isn't 100% effective, as HSV infecteed sites may not be covered by a barrier.

As far as oral herpes (cold sores caused by HSV-1)), the majority of the population is infected by the time they reach adulthood, so I wouldn't be too upset about that. You may already be infected and maybe only ever had one outbreak. It is very possible.

It is important for people to understand that cold sores can result in genital infections and indeed this happens more often than people think. So, if you have an outbreak it is important to follow the same advise as people with genital infections (let your partners know, refrain from activities that put others at risk from the initial symptom of the outbreak until it is completely healed, AND use barriers (dental dams or condoms) at non-outbreak times.
[A lot of people seem to take on the risk of transmission rather than use condoms/dental dams for oral sex....and as long as there is full disclosure and accurate information given, it is up to each individual to assess the amount of risk they are willing to take.]

Hope this helps

First of all, you are confusing two different diseases. Cold sores are caused by the Herpes simplex virus. They are NOT a sexually transmitted disease and someone with a cold sore cannot transmit Herpes Zoster (the STD) to you even if you have oral sex with them. The Herpes Zoster virus can be present in a dormant state in a person and neither they nor you may be aware of its presence. It can lie dormant for months or years even after initial infection. Then again, many people experience the customary "outbreaks" of blister-like sores in their genital area. Transmission is most likely if sexual activity is engaged in during and near in time to an outbreak, however, the virus can be shed at almost anytime from an infected person. New medications (like Valtrex) can lower the chances of transmission.
