The main reason why rock climbers wear an helmet is for protection from falling rocks. If you leading with widely spaced protection, there's also the chance of the head hitting the rock in an extended fall. There is a chance that a boulderer falling from even a moderate height can "hit the deck" with his head,, but most boulderers get by without one.

Good question. 99% of boulderers don't wear a helmet. However, most boulderers go out wih a crew, who spots the one climbing, especially watching their head. But, I think it would be a good idea to wear one. There's still a good chance you could whack your head on a rock, and that could be very serious.
A climbing helmet is probably not necessary though, in fact a paddling or skaeboarding helmet would protect more of the head, and since your not on a cliff, there's not falling roacks, so you don't require the "Hardhat" qualities of the climbing helmet.

Usually when bouldering nobody is above you so you don't have to worry about someone else kicking rocks down on you. You still could fall though and hit your head. This is sort of a personal choice. I usually don't wear a helmet when rock climbing, but in some places I would.

Need one No . Should you ware one. Only you and your experience can tell you. Accidents do happen. I where a helmet and am glad I do. Two times a rock has slaped me in the head. Both times a little banged but OK. Things would have been diffrent without a helmet. I look it at like rideing a motorcycle. Ride long enough and you will fall down. I don't where a helmet on a motorcycle. I have fallen down.

Probably not. You probably shouldn't get above 10-15 feet or so (although many boulderers do). Spotters are necessary though - they don't catch you if you fall, but rather would guide you down in case you fall.
