My best friend Kacie a.k.a Haruko's is planning on having a Japanese themed birthday party. I know alot more than her and I am trying to find out more. Ok she said the attire is to dress in a Kimono (which is uncommon around here) or Visual Kei, Ninja for the boys that are attending etc. I have ordered a kimono and geta ^__^ Hahaha I am losing focus. Ok so we know to hand out chopsticks and paper fans as party favors. I told her temporary Kanji tatoos would be good as well. And decorations she has not really decided but a big banner at the door and the invitations should have their names in Japanese, ne? As for food we live in middle of nowhere Alabama and we need to know where to find Sushi and Squid for rather cheap. And also the instant Yakisoba I think would be good. But decorations also paper lanterns. But could you tell me of more foods, decorations, etc? She is very important to me and I want to gelp her the best I can.

Rachel Ray had a recipe for candy sushi. The link is at the bottom. Also, there are some recipes for regular sushi. Also if you have an Albertson's or a natural food store, they generally carry sushi. You could also serve vegetable stir-fry. Maybe some fortune cookies.
As for decorations, lanterns are great. You might make the paper and wood looking screens. Also you could use a low coffee table with floor pillows to eat at. Maybe some oriental parasols around the room and the lucky cat. You might want to get some oriental sounding music to play in the background as well. Good luck.

Get paper lanterns for decorations you can find them online.. and as far as food is concerned the main staple is rice!! Most people don't like squid or sushi but you can sometimes find it in the frozen section of the grocery store.. my guy has calamari in the freezer right now and that is another name for squid or octopus. You might be able to find a receipe online for sushi.. something simple with marinated fish and wrapped in seaweed.

You can get sushi mats, seaweed and recipe information online. You don't need to get crazy, just do California rolls (cucumber, avocados, fake crab meat available everywhere). Everyone can learn it. Have people make their own.

Also, if you have a griddle, play teppanyaki or Japanese steakhouse. All you need is thin sliced chicken and beef with onions and mushrooms. Try to juggle pepper mills and salt shakers. Practice making an onion volcano (I'm sure you can find instructions online).

This site has some great ideas and things to order. Also check out the Oriental Trading Company

What might be kinda fun is for everyone to make their own sushi roll- you don't have to do raw fish you can do sticky rice, veggies, avacado, cooked chicken-etc. Might be kinda fun and have several dipping sauces. Thsi can be your main dish per say and then have some stir fry veggies, japanese cracker and snack mix.

you can order oriental decorations from oriental trading company
dragons, lanterns, lights, etc

not sure where to get sushi from, check for chinese buffets, often times they have at least a few varieties or can special make it for you, grocery stores sometimes carry it, hibachi/japanses resturants, you can make it too- not really difficult.
squid might be carried at your grocery store too, or at a seafood store.
