I agree with your view that many celebrities advocating a "green" lifestyle nevertheless lead lives of hypocrisy. What makes their message worse sometimes is that adopting some of the alternative ways of living does little more than say, putting a band-aid over a gaping gunshot wound. However, celebrity endorsements seem to work on some level in the sheep-like culture in which we live, or else businesses would have stopped using the technique to market their products long, long ago. So yes, I think people do listen to celebrities when the message is packaged in the right way and whatever is being promoted is also designed so as not to require too much effort.
As to whether the message would be more meaningful -- definitely yes if it were coming from individuals' whose lives were not than superficially green, and yes if it were directed at those who can think for themselves. But for practical purposes, I think most people do listen to celebrities and do not give a fig as to how such celebrities are generating more waste than not.

I think they've done more harm than good for the movement, especially the politicians getting involved. A lot of people were really ticked about Live Earth because it was such a hypocrisy and some of the artists made horrible comments that illustrated their apathy. I felt really bad for the artists there who actually cared about the cause (like AFI) because they were mostly lesser known acts and didn't seem to get as much air time as the hypocritical billionaire mega-stars.
Then you have Al Gore, who has turned environmentalism into a political issue, resulting in many conservatives turning their backs on the enivornment just to go against the liberals. I don't even see why Gore is such a hero to environmentalists, he exaggerated a lot of facts in that film and left out others. If you want a candidate who really cares, vote for Dennis Kucinich and stop waiting for that hypocrite to through his hat in the ring.

Sure it would seem more meaningful. It would also inconvenience those who are most used to luxuries and conveniences. (i.e. celebrities and politicians) It is so much easier to tell people how they should live than to actually live that way yourself.
Those that drink the green eco-nazi koolade, or hang on every lie that drips out of Al Gores mouth might follow "the movement", but those who think for themselves and have strong BS detectors can see past the silliness. Nothing wrong with "living green", but when you tell people they should change their light bulbs, then throw a concert that uses as much power as a small town, or fly a jet all over to preach energy conservation, you get ZERO credibility for your message.

I only listen to myself. As such I ride my bike to work, I don't buy any useless crap that just breaks and ends up in a landfill. Hell I dont even eat out anymore.
Just learn to be more of a hermit, work on your art, stop cruising for the sake of wasting time and gas. Talk to people more, watch less TV, but above all else, stop buying junk you dont need. Like celebrities do. Just because you can, does not mean you must.

I don't pay any attention to the Gorites.
At least I'm not hypocritical as them, like Al Gore who flies in his own private jet and all.
I have planted trees all my life, I like trees, but I also know that they are a good source for building material.

Yeah - "Mansions" is the incorrect translation. "Rooms" is extra suitable. I had on no account regarded at combining metaphors, yet there's a case to be made that the rooms are made up of many stones, which may well be the people of God. The collaboration between us - who in exercising loose-will - *identifying on* to stick to God's lead as He refines us and works in and in the process us is extensive. certainly, that's the relationship that one sees in its infancy in the backyard. Now, Jesus calls us pals, not Servants, so there is yet another extra mature relationship that God invitations us into.

I try very hard to not listen to anything celebrities have to say and just as hard at ignoring any politician that has the arogance to believe that he knows better than me what is best for me and my family.
