There are certain types of mold that can be a health hazard. The mold would need to be tested. Some molds appear to be "black" and are not considered dangerous. On the other hand some molds don't need to be black to be a hazard because you could be allergic and this represents a health hazard all by itself. The mold should be tested for obvious reasons. Whatever the case is, "dangerous" mold or not, it should be cleaned up and the source of water/humidity that caused the mold in the first place should be repaired.

There are a lot of types of mold and most of them will look either greenish, grayish or blackish in color but it the mold you are talking about is definitely black mold, it can be deadly to pets and humans if inhaled. To be sure you are dealing with true black mold, wear gloves and a mask and put a bit of it into an airtight plastic bag and take it to the health authorities to have it analized. Most states have laws about residents with black mold especially if they are rentals. Mold will grow in any place, even grass where the climate is cool to cold and dark and damp. Since that is just about anyplace on planet earth, you need to take steps to keep it out of your living areas. Most all molds can cause alergies too but black mold is deadly so I would check it out very carefully and make sure it is truely 'black mold' and if it is, the health department will usually step in and give an owner of a rental property a notice to clean it up. Most times, you actually have to vacate the premesis while this is being done because it is so deadly. I suggest you don't waste time finding out if it really is black mold or if it is just black in color.

No mold is good but I think your concern is with a mold that looks like a swirl of green red black, darker colors. If you ever seen a oil spot that is on wet lot its a swirl of colors. That's the really bad mold. Like a rainbow swirled together.

You're thinking of Stachybotrys, a mold that produces certain toxins than cause malaise and even bleeding gums in persons with weakened immune symptoms. It is found in buildings where moisture has permeated and cannot dry out properly. It is the purported cause of the "sick building" syndrome, and perhaps why your child gets sick at school.
