He already had it in his genes before he was born. Then something in the environment, nobody knows exactly what, kicked it into gear.

The cause of diabetes is not always known. I got type I when I was 31, after being completely healthy all my life. Sometimes it's just a fluke thing. I sincerely doubt that he did anything to bring it about.

Type 1 diabetics are usually born with it. There pancreas doesnt produce insulin or their insulin chemistry doesnt work they require insulin shots

Type one is something you have from birth and it manifests sometime during childhood. It is caused by the pancreas not properly regulating insulin levels.

Genetics, ethnicity, whatever. It is not improtant how he got, but that you know about it and can now treat it.
It is not easy to deal with ( I have type 2), but you have to. Just have to be real careful with what you eat and monitor often.
