It is called Haemoptysis. It can be caused by a variety of things and Yahoo Answers may worry you a lot more than necessary. When you go to the doctor he/she will refer you to hospital to get a chest x-ray, which will show any underlying pathologies, the vast majority of which is treatable.

Bronchitis
Nose bleed
Pneumonia
Pulmonary Embolus
Cancer
It is most commonly going to be something that happens commonly - eg a viral infection - you cough and cough and irritate the lining of your air passages and you cough up a streak of blood.
There are other conditions, however, which can cause you to cough up blood. Hence this is something that needs checking out.
The worst case I have seen (incredibly rare) is an 11yo girl who came in having coughed up a clot of blood about an inch diameter or more. She also had a sore knee. Her chest x-ray and knee x-ray were abnormal and it turned out that she had a bone cancer (osteogenic sarcoma) that had spread to her lungs.
Incredibly rare. I would bet any amount of money that this is not what is going on with you.
However, you need to get checked out.

Depends on how much blood was there. If you were coughing hard you could have broken a blood vessel in your esophagus or throat and that could give you a small amount blood tinge in the mucus you have coughed up. Are you a smoker? Worst case scenario coughing up blood could indicate lung cancer or tuberculosis. Another possibility is esophagitis if you have a lot of heartburn. It could really be any number of things. Good luck.
