RE:
Is cool whip vegan? What about near east brand spanish rice?
The ingredients in the cool whip sure look vegan but it seems weird to me that it would be vegan for some reason. And what are the "natural flavors" in the near east brand spanish rice?

If you go to the company's Web site, you can find at least the nutrition information label and sometimes the ingredients as well. Kraft is good at providing both. After looking onthe Kraft stie, I found this, http://www.kraftfoods.com/main.aspx?s=product&m=product/Product_display&Site=1&Product=4300000960
Once I got past the really icky hydrogenated oils (I want to know how it supposedly has no trans fat with fully hydrogenated oils), and high fructose corn syrup, I found the listing of sodium casenate. Yum. (It's funny. I get the Kraft "Food and Family" magazine, though I don't know why, except that it's free. They like to mark Cool Whip and Jello as "healthy" or "smart" options. Ha ha. I guess that's not for those who think.)
I went to the Near East site and only found the nutrition list for the rice pilaf.
Ever since I read "Fast Food Nation" spring of last year, I've been leary of "natural flavors" and "natural colors". If I remember correctly, I think the book even said that "natural colors" can be derived from things like bugs. It might be natural, but I may not want to eat it.
I hope this helps.

Cool whip is vegan. As for the rice, i don't know. "Natural flavors" only means that the flavoring was derived from other edible substances. Dehydrated beef broth can be a natural flavoring. You'll have to ask the company.

Cool whip contains sodium caseinate, which is derived from milk. "Natural" flavors can be from any source, but are usually animal sources. The FDA allows anything GRAS (generally recognized as safe) to be labeled as natural, but much of my own research has shown that its typically animal sources used in flavorings.

Read the labels on the products. Google, "FDA natural flavors" and look at the top few posts.
