Wow, If that same rule applied to humans... there would be a lot of innocent people being killed... you would probably be one of them :]

hmm this is a tough one. Normally I'd say never, because as human beings we don't have the right to kill an animal that never did anything to us (aka innocent), esp. if we don't need to.
In these circumstances, though, IMHO, I'd say its acceptable:
(1) an animal is attacking your child and is about to kill him/her (actually i guess the animal wouldn't be innocent in this case)
(2) if there is simply no other choice (which there almost always is)...even if I were to live in the wild I'd rather kill myself than kill an innocent animal
(3) when you don't know/can't help killing the animal (we all breathe and kill microorganisms, don't we)?
(4) when the animal is suffering and is in intense pain and cannot be cured
solidcrust: thanks for the clarification and correction. Just so you know I removed that part you corrected me on, and also, thank you for not giving me a thumbs-down even though you could have. What I had posted was simply what I had understood of some discussions I have heard in some Muslim Halal meat shops, and otherwise. Clearly in this case I either have a faulty memory or a misunderstanding, but I'd like you to know I'm not someone that generally likes to act like I know something if I don't. I may be no expert but what I have stated comes from something I have learned/gathered from somewhere, rather than me just making up some BS. Thanks for reading.

It never is unless the animal is in serious pain and cannot be helped.Or perhaps if you got attacked by an animal and killed it in self defence but then I suppose it wouldn't be 'innocent'.However even then I wouldn't kill or seriously hurt the animal unless there was no other way I'd get away alive.
On the other hand I could easily be tempted to kill certain idiotic people..

How about "big fat" people ?, or those called "ian".
So, you are saying that the structure of someone, or some animals, skin and bones determines thier value and right to life ?
God help anyone that goes out with you, guess you'll have them killed if they get old or put on a bit of weight will you ?

Isn't that like fishing with tofu?
"Hold up, yeah, I think I got a nibble - wow - look at it go. It's thrashing about and - what a specimen. Time to put that beauty back for another day. It may have some more fight in it then."
Try the religious section and bait up with extreme analysis of ambiguous bible passages.

It's a shame when people ask questions like this. And when people answer them in the way everyone here is. It proves what a load of idiots there are around. Just my opinion!
