The traditional English dish is a mutton pie - but we don't eat them any more.
Most of the things we think are English are quite recent imports.
Fish & Chips? Well we've been frying fish for years but fried chipped potatoes are an idea we got from Belgium about 100 years ago. The Belgians eat them with mayonnaise. Americans call them French Fries but they never were much good at Geography.
Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding. Few people ate roast beef until Victorian times. For a big occasion you might roast an ox, but going down the butchers for a bit of topside is a recent idea. The Yeoman warders at the Tower of London were called beef eaters because they ate beef and it was something unusual. Yorkshire Pudding? Another Belgian idea - we only adopted that after the first world war. We've been eating curry for longer.

The hunt for the official English dish is on!
London, March 21 /PRNewswire/ --
- Chef Brian Turner to set out on regional culinary tour
This April, chef and renowned lover of traditional English food, Brian Turner will embark on a national search to find England's official dish, to celebrate St George's Day.[1]
Brian will scour the North, the South and the Midlands, sampling some of the regions' finest cooking whilst delving into the origins of each of the recipes, and plans to leave no dish unturned!
A BBC poll for the TV series 'The Nation's Favourite Food' tells us that Britain's favourite dish is Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding, but what is England's?
On his culinary travels, Brian will be asking the public to vote and will pose the question 'Is it the traditional food the English eat that gives a distinct regional identity?' Will Brian, the born and bred Yorkshireman discover that we all love his home-cooked Roast Beef & Yorkshire Puddings, or will the Lancashire Hotpot rule the North? Or do we prefer Southern dishes like the Cornishman's pasty? The choice is yours. The winning recipe will then be championed as the 'official' English dish to enjoy on St George's Day - it's about time we celebrated our national day, don't you think?
So make sure you keep a look out for Brian in your area to cast your vote.
Note to editors:
[1] St George's Day takes place on 23 April.

There isn't an "official" one.
A few well known traditional ones are fish & chips, the sunday roast, the heart attack on a plate full English breakfast... and chicken madras ;o)

Official?
The UK government hasn't gone that far - yet!
Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding
Fish 'n chips.
But if you ask Brits living abroad, they'd probably say Steak and kidney pudding.
And apple pie made with Bramley apples and served with custard - preferably made with Bird's custard powder - not home made.
