Hi oceanlady, vegans don't need any protein powders, tablets, etc. for "boosting energy", In fact, go easy on protein as it may interfere with your good health! See this: http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/protein.html . :o)

(1) FOOD: If you eat the proper foods that nature created for the vegetarian animals of which humans are a part, you'll rarely suffer from anything. Humans, and most nonhuman animals, need 3 food categories: raw fresh veggies (salads including dark leafy green veggies on season), raw fresh fruits (of all colors and shapes on season), and protein, that you can accompany with steamed dark leafy green and other veggies (which you'll find in all types of whole grains, dry beans, peas, seeds, nuts, tofu, tempeh, TVP, seitan (gluten), etc. and the innumerable "meat analogs" sold in health food stores. You can prepare them in any way you like with olive oil and Bragg's Liquid Aminos for seasoning (better than soy sauce), plus all those great herbs known for millennia by all cooks! :o) Leave off sugar, or too much salt, leave off fast foods, especially animal products like milk, eggs, honey, etc. and make sure they aren't hidden in prepared foods. For beverage, NOTHING is better than...WATER...cold, fresh and crystalline! :o) BUT, here are two more important ingredients to your "diet":

(2) EXCERCISE!: Try to exercise daily if you are under 50, and about 3 or 4 times a week if you are over 50 with doctor's advice. If you do it at a gym WITH a class, you'll be more loyal to your exercise, otherwise swimming and other rythmic and CONTINUOUS movements, including brisk walking is fine.

(3) MIND: Must avoid aggravation, especially the unnecessary one! Must learn to choose unstressful or low stressful situations because the mind is the most abused or at least neglected "organ"! Must develop compassion for others, including nonhuman animals.

The above life path is what we, vegans, have taken and the greatest majority of us rarely have to see doctors, hospitals, etc. don't know what's a headache, stomach pain, etc. It's worth to take this different life path for the sake of your total health - body and mind.

Enjoy and pass around. ;o) Adela

I have seen a lot of people responding about different things you can take and I agree with most but some that they did not mention are ginseng, i put that in my smoothie and it helps your immune system. I also love these little tiny cans called Sencha shots, any health food store should have them. They have about 5 cups worth of green tea in one little shot, and green tea is naturally caffinated and helps with weight control and sooo many other things. Lastly also at any health food store you should find Kombucha tea, not the tea bags you brew but it should be in the refrigerated drink section. That gives you a serious buzz and the health benefits are amazing!

Personally I have found that being tired is usually your body telling you that it does not like something you are putting in it or needs more of something. I was vegan for a long time and switched to being a raw foodist. My energy levels went crazy. Try to eat a lot of raw foods bc thay have all the delicate enzymes in tact and those enzymes literally break down that food for you so it takes your body little to no energy to digest so you dont feel tired after eating, you feel so invigorated!!!

Well I wish you luck on your vegan path, you never know what way it will take you! Have fun!!

Hi Adela's answer is really good. You should follow that advice.

However, because you are always tired, you should have a blood test and have your iron and B12 levels checked first. Extreme tiredness is a sign of low B12. Lots of veggies have this problem and it can be solved by getting a shot from your doc. This works quicker than liquid B12 and will make you feel better very quickly. If your B12 is low then this affects your other iron levels so you do need to get it checked out.

Once you get it sorted initially you just need to keep an eye on your diet to make sure you get enough of what you need to keep it ok.
Good luck
Enjoy being vegan and never mind the begrudgers!

You will find after a week or two of being vegan that you naturally have more energy!
I do shift work and am always tired, but since Ive become a vegetarian, I jump out of bed, the depression I always have is gone, Im always waking my partner up wanting to go out and do something...

So just eat a balanced diet, and give it some time! ;-)

I agree ginseng indeed helps. When I am overworked or tired I take that and I will few much better later on. Of course you must really get sufficient sleep as well.

As for what kind of foods to take I think it's important to experiment it yourself, like how do you feel after eating different meals? Because I think different people may experience differently with the same foods. Don't eat 100% full in each meal.

Exercise, like what Answerer 6 mentioned is important. After I exercise, I feel much better and more awake.

Another thing you can do is concentration/mindfulness (samatha) meditation. This meditation helps us achieve one-pointedness of mind and our mind becomes less scattered and more focus, we will hence require less sleep as well.

Given that you're female, you're probably lacking in iron. Almost all menstruating females are anemic, regardless of diet. Try a vegan formula multivitamin and eating more dark leafy greens first, if that doesn't work ask your doctor about a straight iron supplement. You need to get your doctor's advice before using these though, because they can upset your stomach and cause constipation.

Iron. Protein shakes (soy, rice or pea protein powder) Put banana/fake milk/protein powder and a half cup of chosen berries in a blender with some ice.

Caffeine. It's a natural source product. You can have a red bull, tab energy drink, Rockstar, Arush or other product to help you get the energy you feel you are missing.

I would also do what one of the other posters said and eat more protein. It may be that you are not getting one specific ammino acid, which can make you lethargic. Beans and Rice covers all of the ammino acids at once.

Every morning I have a fruit smoothie with protein powder - and don't forget to take multi vitamins! The guy above is right on - you really need to get some protein powder and supplements.
