In a nutshell, the top number is called systolic blood pressure, and the bottom number is called diastolic blood pressure. The systolic pressure refers to the amount of pressure the blood is exerting on the blood vessels while the heart is PUMPING. The diastolic pressure refers to pressure the blood is exerting on the blood vessels while the heart is RELAXED (between pumping). A 150/90 B/P is rather high, depending on the situation. If you were facing a raging pitbull attack, this would probably not be abnormal. However, if you were sitting in a chair watching the Simpson's, that is definitely something to follow up on. For example, taking your blood pressure on a consistent basis. See a Dr. if this is persistent as this will be something that absolutely must be addressed, either with diet (lowering salt intake) or placing you on a hypertensive medication.

The higher (systolic) number represents the pressure while the heart is beating. The lower (diastolic) number represents the pressure when the heart is resting between beats. The systolic pressure is always stated first and the diastolic pressure second. For example: 122/76 (122 over 76); systolic = 122, diastolic = 76. Blood pressure of less than 140 over 90 is considered a normal reading for adults.

When your contracts to pump out the blood it is with some outgoing pressure that is called your upper or systolic blood pressure and when your heart dilates and fills up the blood inside it that also with some pressure which is called diastolic blood pressure ! So blood pressure is always told in two figure one is upper one that is systolic and second is lower one that is diastolic ! Now the normally upper one is 120 and lower one is 80 means systolic is 120 and diastolic is 8o ! This is for adult! The lower one is more important because it is the continuous pressure inside the all vascular system against which heart has to work to circulate the blood !If satisfied give full best answer mark! If you can visualize a mechanical cylinder/piston with two valves(an intake and an exhaust. While the piston is pushing blood out of the cylinder the exhaust valve is open and you have a high reading of say 150. Then the piston reverses, the exhaust valve closes and the intake valve opens, charging the cylinder with fresh supply of blood (from the veins)and you have the lower reading of 90. Then the whole cycle repeats.
