If this really does help, are there any side effects. I never drink alcohol. I also don't want to be considered an alcoholic, and by definition, 1 drink a day makes you one. Please advise.

It's helped me - both with blood pressure and cholesterol, and I'm not a drinker either. My blood pressure was through the roof, ( and cholesterol was high too) despite medication and diet changes, and I'm doing fine, now that I'm having 1 good sized glass of wine every evening.
Sometimes I forget to have it, but then I just make a note to have one the next night. I certainly don't "crave" it, but my cardiologist and GP recommended it, so that's good enough for me.

Hun, 1 drink a day does NOT make you an alcoholic.
For common and historical usage, it refers to any condition that results in continued consumption of alcoholic beverages DESPITE NEGATIVE consequences.

If there are no negative consequences and the 1 glass of wine a day is giving you benefits, then it's a POSITIVE consequence.... and can actually be good for you.

Moderate “wine drinkers” (those who consumed <60 g/d of alcohol and no beer) in quartiles of systolic blood pressure averaging 116, 129, 139, and 158 mmHg, had lower risks of death from all causes by 37%, 2%, 27%, and 23%, respectively, than did abstainers; all differences except for the second quartile were statistically significant. No significant reduction in all-cause mortality in relation to SBP was observed in other drinkers (those who consumed both beer and wine or those consuming ³60 g alcohol/d from wine). The authors conclude that a moderate intake of wine is associated with a lower risk of mortality from all causes in persons with hypertension.

First it has to be red wine and then it has to be a full glass! I started this for Cholesterol and my Mother joined in, for Cholesterol and Blood Pressure. Both our GPs, we have different ones thought it was a 'good idea' and so the bottle was opened and corked after the glass, lasted well over a week. It did ZIP! Been doing it for six months and ZIP? It was only when I checked with my GP that he kinda said 'One ounce is not the recommended level, one unit is!' So off to find what one unit is and the first night, well we were happy! Not drunk, just kinda happy. After the first week we got used to the one unit and then things like cholesterol started to lower and blood pressure [Mother] started to come down. That means a change of drugs, lowering of drugs. Then I had to stop with the Morphine, as it does not mix with alcohol, so I have switched to pomegranate juice and that is holding the cholesterol in check, no drugs TG!
The way to know if you are a Alcoholic, if you cannot go one day without a alcoholic drink. If the answer to that is NO, then sorry but you have a drink problem. From my point of view, giving up the glass of wine was not a problem, but I do feel sorry for those who are alcoholics or even binge drinkers, because if in the future they really need to go on morphine, they are going to have problems.

1 drink per day does NOT make you an alcoholic. My 65 year old mother was advised by her MD to drink 1 glass of RED wine per night, but It wasn't for blood pressure or colesterol. I don't remember what it was for actually. Read about L-theanine for blood pressure and colesterol. Completely natural, derived from green tea leaves.

Yes, and, as always, it depends on the person and the amount of abuse. It takes a lot of drinking to raise blood pressure, but more than like three or four drinks a day will definitely do it. I'm not the authority on blood sugar, but alcohol is RIDDLED with sugar, so I'm almost positive it can drastically increase your blood sugar. ASK YOU DOCTOR!!!
