If it is inside his mouth it is not herpes (cold sore).

Cold sores appear on the outside of the mouth, in the corners of the mouth or on the lips.

Canker sores or ulcers occur inside the mouth, on the tongue, the cheeks and the inside of the lip.

Good luck to your boyfriend!

Herpes Simplex or type 1 herpes is very common and very contagious. Anybody can get this, even people who are not sexually involved. I remebered having a canker sore on my lip when I was about 8 years old. I also have gotten those sores inside my mouth. From what I hear it could be certain foods-especially if the food has a lot of acid in it.

There are two types of herpes simplex virus: HSV-1 and HSV-2. Both virus types can cause sores around the mouth (herpes labialis) and on the genitals (genital herpes). Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Cold sores sometimes called fever blisters, are groups of small blisters on the lip and around the mouth. The skin around the blisters is often red, swollen, and sore. The blisters may break open, leak a clear fluid, and then scab over after a few days. They usually heal in several days to 2 weeks.
The herpes simplex virus usually enters the body through a break in the skin around or inside the mouth. It is usually spread when a person touches a cold sore or touches infected fluid—such as from sharing eating utensils or razors, kissing an infected person, or touching that person's saliva. A parent who has a cold sore often spreads the infection to his or her child in this way. Cold sores can also be spread to other areas of the body.

Dont worry it is just a canker sore....they are quite common and can be because he ate something with a lot of acid in it like tomatoes or oranges or just bite his lip or something....nothing to worry about. they will go away in a few days, tell him to gargle with salt water or use a good mouth wash and it will help it from not coming back.
