Stents are placed inside the blocked coronary artery/arteries, which lie ABOVE the heart.
Certain Coronary arteries lie at the base of the heart and stent/s are used you can term it BELOW, but physically they are lying over the myocardium(heart).

The heart is a hollow pump with four chambers. Its large blood vessels and major branches are all on the outside of this muscle. Smaller capillary arteries are on the surface and within the muscle walls.
Most stents go in these large arteries, but smaller ones can go into some branch arteries. The smallest as of last September is about a centimeter long and the width of a standard pencil lead. I have two of those in branch arteries near the lower portion of my heart.
Stents can also be used for non-cardiac arteries if blocked somewhere else in your body.

Stents can be used in "any" artery that is accessible via a catheter. Most common are coronary artery stents and there are two types; normal stents and drug eluting stents called cyphers. The drug eluting stents are supposed to reduce the formation of scar tissue in the artery where the stent is placed. They were first used in 2001 and are still being evaluated for long term patency. Stents are placed in the arteries...... but can not be placed too close to the heart ~ Their purpose is to keep the wall of the arteries open I believe ~
