Landfills that will recycle computers are very rare, and Dell usually only will accept your old one if you are buying a new one from them.

I don't know what cities are in SW Florida. Here in Dallas, there is a county facility that will accept computers for recycling. People learn about it by calling the City of Dallas information line.

This link is to a document with some computer recycling contacts in Florida (http://www.dep.state.fl.us/waste/quick_topics/publications/shw/electronics/FLDonationList013105.pdf). Maybe you could try them, or call your city information line to see if they have a program in place.

Good luck.

HP Computers accepts all computers even other brands for recycling. Click on the following link http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/globalcitizenship/environment/recycle/index.html . There is a charge to have the computer shipped at a flat fee.

The materials will be separated for recovering and reused in new products.
Greendisk is another company that recycles not only electronics but VHS/DVD/Cd's and other audio/video as well. Again separating and recovering materials. They use people with disabilities providing employment. http://www.greendisk.com/
Hope this helps.

Is it working?
I'd check with local charities that serve families as well. We just donated an older computer to a group that wanted to give it to a person who needed it to be able to learn basic email/internet skills to secure a better paying job.
You don't need much processing power for that, so an older machine is ok.

You might try any local used computer shop, many shops locally will know where you can take older parts so that they can be reconditioned and used to make systems for less fortunate countries. Some equipment that is technically out of date for us can still be used for educational or business purposes in most circumstances.
