Herpes can be passed by sex (vaginal, oral and anal) and by DIRECT skin to skin contact. It can also be passed by kissing someone with them (cold sores) and it can be passed from a mother to her baby during birth, but this is REALLY rare.
Genital herpes is almost always spread by sex (vaginal, oral or anal), but it can also be contracted by DIRECT skin to skin contact with an infected area.
Cold sores are almost always spread by kissing someone who has them. Cold sores are VERY common. It's estimated about 75 - 80% of the world has cold sores. A lot of people actually get them as kids from being kissed by a family member or relative (like an aunt, uncle, grandparents, etc). A person can also contract cold sores by sharing a drink, cigarettes, lip stick, chap stick, etc, with someone who has cold sores. Basically anything a person with cold sores has their lips on can spread the virus to another person if they put their lips on it right after them.
Oral sex can spread herpes to the genitals from the mouth, and vice versa. If a person has cold sores and gives another person oral sex it can cause that person to develop genital herpes. And, genital herpes can spread to the mouth causing cold sores if a person with genital herpes receives oral sex.

Herpes is a virus and can be transmitted through contact. But there are more than one type of herpes. Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus and is shingles. But these are not the same as genital herpes but same virus.

Herpes is a virus. It can be passed in fluids/close contact. So yes, kissing can pass both type 1 and type 2 herpes; but it doesn't have to be sexual...a mother can kiss her infant & give them herpes. Giving birth can pass herpes on if there is a vaginal outbreak ( so C-section is indicated).

There are diffrent types of herpes. There are 2 types. One isnt as bad as the other. You can get herpes via kiss, sex, or oral sex. If someone is infected and the infected area gets in contact to a mucous membrane (mouth, lips, vagina, or penis) of another person than that person is at high risk of getting infected.
Check out the link below for more info.
Good luck!

Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus. Many of us already have the cold sore virus dormant in our bodies, and never have a flare up of cold sores. We contracted it as children, as it is a very common virus, and children pick it up easily as they often share food and drinks, and may be less concerned about hand washing and hygiene. Cold sores can be transmitted even when the person does not have a cold sore, though it is less likely to happen then.
